Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner Review

I love and adore the original Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner ~ I first purchased it in a kit from Wishtrend back in 2015 and I wrote up a simple review back then, stating that this would be a repeat purchase for me.  And yes, it has been a repeat purchase, 3 times over.   You might think that only purchasing three times since 2015 might mean it isn’t that good, but considering I purchase, receive and review a lot of different toners, it is impressive that I have stuck by this lovely toner and use it still in my skincare routine.

Skin Type/Concerns: oily, blemish prone, aging concerns, pores, fine lines/wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation

I received these products complementary to review and was not paid.  All reviews are my own honest opinion and  I never have been asked to write copy for a brand.  This blog post might contain promo codes, affiliate and referral links, which using my links will help generate a small commission that helps support my blog at no extra cost to you.
Yes, my original photo from 2015 ~ look, the size was smaller too!

The original version has oils in it, which not only add to the lovely light herbal scent, but also has some skincare benefits ~ lavender has healing and antibacterial properties, eucalyptus is a mild analgesic, cooling and can help calm skin, ylang ylang is soothing and skin balancing, for example.  However, some people try to avoid essential oils as their skin is sensitive to them, they cannot use them for other reasons or they need an unscented product.

Original Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Dimethyl Sulfone, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Natto Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Polyquaternium-51, Chlorphenesin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Panthenol, Arginine, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Beta-Glucan, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Copper Tripeptide-1  cosDNA

Enter in the new Supple Preparation Unscented Facial Toner.  It contains the same great ingredients, excluding the essential oils.

Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner Unscented Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Dimethyl Sulfone, Betaine, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Natto Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Centella Asiatica Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Polyquaternium-51, Chlorphenesin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Panthenol, Arginine, Luffa Cylindrica Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Beta-Glucan, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, PortulacaOleracea Extract, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Copper Tripeptide-1  cosDNA

Sodium hyaluronate is an intensive moisturizing ingredient which bonds water to keep skin hydrated. It is a natural substance found in the human body and it made up of amino and uronic acids, and helps retain 100 to 1,000 times its own water weight in our skin cells. Fourth generation moisturizer polyquaternium-51 retains moisture better than beta-glucan.  Panthenol is a natural humectant, which retains moisture and hydrates the skin. It also is a good lubricant on the skin, making skin look soft and smooth. It is also an anti-inflammatory

Centella asiatica is a common herbal ingredient that is used medicinally to help speed up wound healing, such as blemishes and skin rashes. It also helps minimize the appearance of pores. Licorice root helps calm irritated skin while acting as an anti-inflammatory and also reduces hyper-pigmentation. This also uses phyto-oligo ingredients of aloe vera and hollyhock (althaea rosea), which are highly moisturizing and will help prevent dry flaky skin.   These two ingredients are full of minerals, enzymes, amino acids, salicylic acid, sugars and vitamins and will improve your skin’s firmness, prevent inflammation and speed up healing, while soothing.

Natto gum is fermented soybeans and fermented ingredients penetrate your skin more easily and deeper.  Natto contains vitamins, amino acids and enzymes, along with PGA ~ polyglutamic acid.  PGA helps moisturize and exfoliate old skin cells. It can penetrate to the deepest layers in your skin, locks in moisture and helps increase the production of NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor).  Beta glucan is a yeast or fungi derived ingredient will attract moisture to your skin, and then locking it in. It is also an antioxidant, helping soothe your fine lines and wrinkles, as well as soothing your skin.

Vitamin E is the antioxidants of all antioxidants ~ it prevents free radical formation, protects the upper skin layer from initial harmful UV radiation and prevents the deterioration of fats in your cell membranes. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a gentle derivative of Vitamin C, containing antioxidants that contribute to evening out and brightening skin tone.   Copper tripeptide-1 aids in the production of glycosaminoglycans which help support and maintain the production of collagen and elastin,  making your skin firm and retain moisture. Betaine is an amino acid that is a humectant and anti-irritant, providing silky smooth skin and soothes and calms skin.  There are more anti-oxidant amino acids that have water binding properties and also aid in collagen production ~ lysine HCL, proline, acetyl methionine and theanine.

Besides the ingredients, another apparent difference is the bottle ~ the original comes in a brown bottle with a beige label and it is hard to see the toner unless you hold it up to the light.  The unscented version comes in a clear bottle with a purple label and you can really see how thick the toner is.

Now, Klairs states this is “unscented”, but what they really mean is that there is no added fragrance or essential oils.  This does have a scent to it ~ it is a bit chemically and medicinal but that is from the existing ingredients.  If you were expecting a true “unscented” toner, one with no scent, this is not it.  The toner has a viscosity and is thicker than water, but it absorbs beautifully into my skin.

This is so soothing on my skin and keeps my skin hydrated, without causing blemishes or clogging my pores.  Depending on my mood, I either apply with a cotton pad or pat gently into my skin ~ I find I use the latter method more often, as this is not an astringent-type toner. This has the same pH level as the original too, at a skin-balancing 5 level.

This has an increase of 23% in moisture and a 42% decrease in oils, so you can see that this works for oily skin types too!  One of my biggest fears 4 years ago was that this would be too moist and rich for my skin type, but it is not!

Final Thoughts

If you loved the original version and its scent, you can still get the Original one.  Personally, I never had issues with that scent or the oils.  But if you have sensitive skin that cannot use essential oils or you dislike added fragrance, even if it was thru natural means, the Unscented version is probably made for you!  Just keep in mind, it does have a scent, but that comes from the ingredients themselves.  This toner is THE same as the original in terms of performance, texture, pH level and all around just fantastic!   I was chuckling when I read my original review so long ago, as I think I didn’t realize that Klairs Supple Preparation Toner was going to become an HG toner for me!  Either version is wonderful and I am glad that Klairs came out with this version, so for those who really wanted to try it but couldn’t due to the oils, now you can.  It is no surprise this has won the Wishtrend Best Awards for 3 years in a row now and it is the second best selling toner on Amazon USA.  Have you tried Klairs Supple Preparation Toner ~ either version? What did you think of it?

  1. Oh I did not even know that they had an unscented version of this! I love the original and don’t have an issue with scent or oils but it’s nice to know that there is another version for those who are sensitive to smells too! 🙂
