House of Dohwa Rice Skincare Review

Courtesy of online K-Beauty store  Coreelle and Bazzaal, I was offered the chance to select a few products from a new skincare brand, House of Dohwa.  “Dohwagain” (House of Dohwa) means a “person as beautiful as a peach flower” and this is an eco-friendly, cruelty-free skincare brand.  Their key ingredient is locally and ethically sourced South Korean wild rice,  blending nine of the best strains of rice bran extract that is grown using traditional methods. They have a lineup consisting of toner, day  moisturizer, sleeping mask and two wash off masks.    These products were received complementary in exchange for an honest review.

I received these products complementary to review and was not paid.  All reviews are my own honest opinion and  I never have been asked to write copy for a brand.  This blog post might contain promo codes, affiliate and referral links, which using my links will help generate a small commission that helps support my blog at no extra cost to you.

Skin Type/Concerns: Oily, blemish prone, aging, hyper-pigmentation, fine lines/wrinkles, pores

Key Ingredients

House of Dohwa uses a blend of nine, locally harvested South Korean wild rice:  Katuri Chalk, Gwolnado, Silk Chalk, Nami, Danduna, Pork Chalk, Red Tea Narak, Sukna, Heukgang.  No pesticides or chemical fertilizers were used to grown or harvest the rice grains.  There are several different types of rice extracts in their products, please note that not all of these ingredients are in every item.

Rice/Oryza Sativa powder has been used in traditional Asian beauty skincare.  It has have exfoliating benefits, so rice powder helps remove dead skin, absorb excess oils and unclog pores, helping to refine and smooth your skin’s texture.  Found in Rice Wash Off Facial Mask . Rice/Oryza Sativa extracts are full of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other nourishing compounds to help clear your skin, treat acne and has skin brightening and firming benefits.   Found in Rice Toner, Rice Wash Off Facial Mask, Pumpkin Wash Off Facial Mask,  Peach Blossom Overnight Mask

Rice bran water is full of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other nourishing compounds to help clear your skin, improve the appearance of pores, stimulates cellular renewal, treat acne ~ and if that wasn’t enough ~ has skin brightening and firming benefits.  Rice contains γ-oryzanol, which is a potent antioxidant that can slow the production of hyper-pigmentation and prevent freckles and age spots.  Rice contains amylase, an enzyme that initiates the breakdown of glucose bonds, which is that “glue” that binds dead cells with living cells. This will whisk away dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smooth and looking brighter.  It is full of antioxidant vitamins B1, C, E, minerals and ferulic acid. Found in Rice Wash Off Facial Mask

Saccharomyces/rice ferment filtrate is the fermenting of rice with yeast ~  saccharomyces, which is full of amino acids, essential minerals, vitamins, beta glucan. . Rice ferments, diluted with water, has been used for centuries in Japan as part of a skin care routine, due to its moisturizing abilities from kojic acid. It also will suppress the performance of melanin so that hyper-pigmentation is reduced and your skin tone is brighter.  Found in  Rice Wash Off Facial Mask

Rice Bran Toner is the type of rice toner for those who want one that is watery, yet hydrating, unscented and not fermented.  I love my rice toners, whether they are fermented or not, milky or watery.  This  not only contains the nine types of rice bran extracts, but some really lovely hydrating and clarifying ingredients. Hinoki cypress (chamaecyparis obtusa) has antiseptic, anti fungal and antiviral properties to heal blemishes and minor skin issues, like abrasions and rashes, and purifying your skin. Willow bark is a natural salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid) and will help exfoliate dead skin cells and is an anti-inflammatory

Glycerin will moisturize and hydrate the skin, leaving your face feeling smooth and soft. Amino acid arginine promotes healing and detoxes your skin. It also helps guard against the formation of wrinkles and loss of skin firmness.  Allantoin moisturizes, exfoliates and softens skin, making it look smooth and refined, while reducing and relieving irritation.  Another amino acid, betaine, is a humectant and anti-irritant, providing silky smooth skin while soothing and calming the skin..

Adenosine is a yeast derived, amino acid and it became popular after it was found to help improve the reduction of wrinkles, smoothing your skin and anti-inflammatory. Adenosine is safe to use day and night, unlike vitamin C and retinol. Chrysanthemumcontains a high concentration of vitamin A so it can help with soothing irritated skin, as it is an anti-inflammatory with antiseptic benefits.  Lemon balm helps to help wounds quickly and also prevent new blemishes.

This comes in a huge 500 mL bottle and it has a slight milky look to it in an otherwise clear liquid, if that makes sense.  It has no scent to it and it is very watery.  I use this liberally all over my face and neck, as this is one great hydrating toner.  It doesn’t sting, absorbs quickly and keeps my skin fresh and hydrated!  This has a pH level of 5, so it is mildly acidic and good for your skin.  I love using this with DIY masks too ~ either using cotton pads or compressed dried mask pods, this toner will help keep my skin soft and less irritated.  It is also great to use after a chemical exfoliation treatment as well.

Rice Wash Off Facial Mask  is a creamy gentle mask that softly scrubs away dead skin cells.  This product contains all of the rice ingredients ~ water, powder, ferments and extracts.  The white shade comes from titanium dioxide,  The rice is the star of the mask and not only does this have that soft texture, but it does smell like freshly cooked rice, making me hungry.  I use this in the morning when I need to whisk away some dead skin cells and flaky skin from my tret treatments.  It is not harsh at ALL.    I love the packaging for the wash off masks ~ they come in this flexible plastic bottles that remind me of IV bags, only smaller.  They are re-closable with a twist off cap.   These fit nicely in my shower caddy.

Pumpkin Wash Off Facial Mask I am excited about this mask!!  Nutrient rich pumpkin also contains some beneficial vitamins ~  antioxidant vitamins C and vitamin A, which combat and repair damage from free radicals, while soothing and softening your skin. Pumpkin also contains enzymes that will remove dead skin cells, unclog your pores so your skin is clearer and cleaner. It also can control excess sebum, reduce redness and swelling and prevent new blemishes from forming as it contains vitamin T(torulitine).

To prevent your skin from drying out this not only has hydrating glycerin in it, but polyquaternium-51, a moisturizer that helps improve your skin’s moisture retention and also prevents moisture loss from your skin, as it creates a protective layer over your skin.   There are lots of skin conditioning botanicals ~ traditional medicinal herb coptis japonica root,   antioxidant and skin-calming eclipta prostrata, antioxidant and hydrating coccinia indica fruit,  antioxidant rich passion fruit,  skin brightening, anti-aging  nympheaea alba flower, anti-inflammatory and skin brightening licorice, cleansing, antiseptic and antibacterial pepperming and finally, the motherload ~  ginger.

Ginger contains 40 antioxidant compounds that help with anti-aging, removes toxins and stimulates your blood circulation. It combats and prevents damage from free radicals, helping improve elasticity which makes your skin firm, toned and less wrinkles. It have anti-bacterial properties to help fight off infections, it is also an anti-septic and antimicrobial, which helps keep blemishes away and its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and swelling of the skin. It also helps reduce the appearance of hyopigmented scarring ~ these scars are lighter than your skin tone and occur when your skin loses its pigmentation ~ it is the exact opposite of hyper-pigmentation. It also is a skin brightener and can help even out your skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin.

This wash off mask is in a watery gel like formula that is a light orange shade ~ it has a very faint yeasty scent to it,.  It is very runny and even with a thick layer, it looks like I didn’t apply anything on my skin ~ haha.  I only use this around my T Zone, but it is so gentle, I could use it all over my face without any stinging or irritation.  It has a nice cooling effect and this has a pH level of about 5.5 ~ with enzymes, however, it isn’t really about the pH level, like acids.   I felt that this did do a nice job of tidying up my T-Zone area, removing dirt and excess oils.  I found that my T-Zone pores looked smaller in appearance as well.

Peach Blossom Overnight Mask  Can I gush over the packaging?  This is a simple but beautiful frosted plastic jar with a black & white peach flower sketch and Hangul on the side.   It is so pretty and simple, just like the toner bottle.

Made with peach blossom extracts which have antioxidant benefits that can help with reducing skin photo aging with its collagen activities. It also can protect your skin from UVB damage while having moisturizing benefits. Peach extracts are a rich source of vitamin C,   an anti-oxidant that will help defend your skin from free radicals and infections. Peach contain a vast number of flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, which will help remove dead skin cells, hydrate and brighten your skin.

The light pink color comes from cyanocobalamin, which is a natural deep pink. Cyanocobalamin is a man-made form of vitamin B12, which  helps with skin issues, such as eczema while soothing and moisturizing.  Prebiotic fructooligosaccharides helps keep your microbiome healthy and balanced.  It can help in strengthening  your skin barrier, reduce inflammation due to irritation or blemishes and is also a natural hydrating ingredient.   Bifida ferment is a probiotic and it is becoming quite popular to add this ingredient into skincare products now. The claims are that it works as a DNA repair agent when applied to your skin. Bifida lysate is the fermented result of bifida and it should help revitalize skin so it is clear and radiant, increase hydration and prevent dehydrated, rough skin. It should also firm and restore elasticity to your skin while strengthening your skin barrier to help prevent damage from environmental factors.

This has some essential oils in here with lavender and bergamot, but I do not detect any major fragrance with this sleeping mask.  The texture is so smooth and slippery, very much a lightweight gel cream.   It really absorbs quickly into my skin without leaving it sticky or tacky.  In fact, this is so lightweight, I have used it as a day cream!  Why not?  My oily skin really loves this moisturizer.  When I use it as a sleeping mask pack, my skin is so soft and smooth in the morning with no clogged pores or breakouts.  One issue though ~ if it is really dry where you live, you do need to make sure your skin has other more occlusive creams applied before you apply this sleeping mask pack.  The humidity in my home is really low right now, last time I checked it was not even 20%, so my skin is really drying out overnight.  I think this sleeping mask pack is perfect for the warmer months or if you live in a very humid area.

Where to Purchase

I really am impressed by the House of Dohwa skincare line! It’s like it was made for oily, dehydrated skin ~ I do think all skin types will enjoy these products, however.  They are beautifully formulated and on my skin, non irritating.  You can purchase the House of Dohwa at Coreelle ~ Coreelle’s team has worked in discovering new brands in the heart of the K-Beauty mecca, Seoul.  They look for brands that are innovative and unique concepts.  You can read more about their story here.  All prices are in USD.

Also at Coreelle are other brands, such as the minimalist The Potions, a K-Beauty brand that uses a few ingredients with their targeted ampoules.  I reviewed the Acne Relief  line at my IG account
