I Try Stuff So You Don’t Have To ~ B&Soap Coloring Paint Packs (and what you should buy instead)

[ this blog post contains affiliate links  Some products were received for review purposes  ]

Over a month ago, Memebox released a really cool looking mask set by B&Soap (never heard of them) ~ Coloring Paint Packs.  This contained five tubes of mask product, all in different colors and targeting different needs.  This looked so interesting to me that I did purchase it.  And waited for about a month for it to ship out, due to Memebox’s Warehouse move.  Only to have Memebox cancel it on me, even though it was still in stock.  I reordered and got my hands on it.  It is really cute looking… Let’s see how it worked.  I think you can guess by my title…

The layout and design of this kit is really clever.  B&Soap uses a white box with the masks dripping like paint on the cover and when you open it up, it looks like a paint kit.  There are five “paint” tubes, 5 wells for where you can mix your masks and a mask brush.  Each tube is 25 gram, so there isn’t a lot of product here.

  1. White  (Moisturizing) ~  Hyaluronic Acid intensely moisturizes dry skin, leaving it moist and glossy. Key Ingredients: Goat Milk, Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Rosemary Extract, Witch Hazel Extract, Propolis, Aloe Vera Extract
  2. Yellow  (Nourishing) ~  Rich Vitamin C nutrients improve and rejuvenates dull and tired skin. Key Ingredients: Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Rosemary Extract, Witch Hazel Extract, Propolis Extract, Aloe Vera Extract
  3. Green  (Soothing) ~  Aloe Vera relieves and strengthens troubled and stressed skin.  Key Ingredients:  Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Rosemary Extract, Witch Hazel Extract, Propolis
  4. Red (Revitalizing)  ~  Natural red ingredients like Rose Hip Extract powerfully revitalizes tired skin, improving its overall health. Key Ingredients:  Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Rosemary Extract, Witch Hazel Extract, Propolis, Aloe Vera Extract
  5. Black (Pore Care)  ~  Natural black powder ingredients like Charcoal and Cocoa extracts sweep away all impurities, dead skin cells, and excess sebum to clarify and soften skin. Key Ingredients: Charcoal Powder, Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Rosemary Extract, Witch Hazel Extract, Cocoa Extract

I’ll post the ingredients list at the very end of this blog post, but the key ingredients look great, don’t they?  Green tea, lavender, propolis, aloe, witch hazel, rosemary.  I have high hopes with ingredients like this!

I decided to try green, black and red ~ using green on part of my forehead and chin, black around my nose area and red everywhere else.  The masks are gel masks ~ a bit translucent yet vivid colors ~ and they smell like a generic floral soap.  Due to their gel formula, if you apply the mask to thickly, it will drip and run.

This masks do not dry down even after 30 minutes.  They turn sticky and gummy and if you aren’t taking a shower to rinse your face off, they are very hard to remove ~ I recommend using these before you shower.  The result?  Nothing, nada, nothing.  I didn’t see any benefit from using these masks at all.  Now, maybe because I have oily skin, these gentle, delicate masks are wasted on me ~ perhaps they are better suited for dry skin types.   Personally, you can find better masks than these ~ I do a series of Mask Digests on Wash Off Masks, and I bet you can find something there that would suit you better.

Last photo is after 30 minutes ~ still sticky and gummy…

Personally ~ these masks remind me of something you would get for your tween.  The bright, primary colors, cute packaging ~ it just screams slumber party to me.   I cannot recommend these masks if you are serious about your masking ~ they are a great skintertainment gift.   [Purchase: Memebox ] RV $25.00

What YOU Should Get Instead

Now, with Black Friday coming up, I am hoping Memebox is stocked up ~ because I have some masks that I think you should try instead of this set.  I also included links to other stores if you live outside of the USA, as Memebox doesn’t ship internationally.

Clay Masks

I love, love, love the Bonvivant Jelly Clay Masks.  I reviewed them fully here, but I will recap the three clay masks here as well.  This trio was sent to me from Memebox as I am an Ambassador with them.

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Hawaiian Pink Calamine (Troubled Skin Calming)  Okay, Calamine is an ingredient that comes to mind for mosquitoes bites and poison ivy!  Calamine is a very soothing ingredient, and will help reduce swelling and itchiness.  It is also an antiseptic, which will help prevent infections and will disinfect and it is an astringent as well. This is considered an essential medicine by WHO (World Health Organization).   Bonvivant uses 10,000ppm of calamine in this particular mask.  This mask is also made with 30.9%  kaolin clay (1000ppm), which will draw out impurities, such as dirt and excess oil.  Due to its high content of silica, kaolin won’t dry your skin out, but keep it moist and according to the information on the box, it will increase the moisture on your skin by 50%. .  It is no wonder that this mask helps calm and relieve flaky, dry, red and irritated skin with these ingredients.

Review: This pink mask has a cool bouncy pudding-like texture and it has no odor as far as I can tell. It applies smoothly and I left it on for 25 minutes as I had a thicker layer on my face. As it dried down, I could feel my skin tightening ~ it was not uncomfortable but you should know that it does cause that tight and slightly itchy feeling on your skin. I rinsed off the mask when dry, using a sponge to help remove all of the bits. I have to say, I was shocked by the results! I thought this would just reduce the redness and swelling from blemishes, but it also gave my skin a brighter and more radiant look! What strange magic is in this mask? Could calamine cause a more brighter look? I will have to research the ingredient list and look for what could have caused this amazing brightening on my skin!

Update:  Yes, it looks like calamine can cause brightening of the skin tone as it is basically zinc oxide, which helps fade blemishes, hyper-pigmentation and give an overall brightening effect on your face.  In fact, I learned that many people use calamine lotion to help fade and prevent blemishes, control oil and also as a moisturizer.  It also helps block UVA and UVB rays, giving your skin some protection against the sun.    [Purchase: Memebox | eBay ]

Ingredients: Water, Kaolin (1000ppm), Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Calamine (10,000ppm), Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Volcanic Ash, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol  cosDNA analysis

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Jeju Volcanic (Blackhead Remover)    This is a traditional volcanic ash and clay mask ~ All of these masks contain kaolin and volcanic ash, but the Jeju Volcanic contains 1000 ppm of volcanic ash, 35% of kaolin clay and charcoal.   Charcoal is a fantastic cleanser and detox ingredient, acting like a magnet to pull out and trap excess oil and impurities in your skin.  This mask has the normal feel of a clay mask, it isn’t as bouncy as the pink version, but it is still jelly like in texture.  This mask specializes in removing dirt and oil that is deep down in your pores and really giving your skin a good detox.

Review: This is the 2nd clay mask from Bonvivant that I am trying from the 3 jelly mask line  ~ it is made with kaolin clay, volcanic ash and charcoal powder and helps draw out impurities and detox your skin.  The clay is not as “bouncy” as the Pink Hawaiian Calamine mask I used last night ~ it is a bit more thinner in texture, like not-quite-yet-set pudding.  It applies on smoothly and doesn’t seem to have an odor that I can detect.  When it dries down it doesn’t tightening or pull at my skin, so it is a gentle clay mask.  I rinsed this off after 15 minutes, and this was a mask that took a bit of time to remove ~ it really didn’t want to leave my skin!  Once again, I went into using this mask as meh, another Volcanic mask.. big woop.  However, I had two small little blemishes that were right under my skin and this mask actually drew them out and expelled them!  That is a pretty BFD!  I am pleased with this mask because it really is working to remove toxins and draw out impurities in clogged pores.  [PurchaseMemebox | eBay ]

Ingredients: Water, Kaolin (35%), Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Charcoal Powder, Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Volcanic Ash (1000ppm), Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine,Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, CI 77499  cosDNA analysis

Bonvivant Mellow Clay Mask Mint Tea Tree (Dead Skin Cell Remover)  This mask is the most interesting to me as I love mint and tea tree!   This mask contains .01 ppm of tea tree oil and it is a fantastic blemish fighting ingredient and mint (.08%)  just smells great ~ and it is refreshing and it has a high content of salicylic acid.   This is an exfoliating mask due to the walnut shell powder (1%) acting as some little scrubby bits in the mask. This is a thin green-gray clay mask, with bits of powder added for texture and exfoliation.

Review: This is the last of the trio and one that I was most interested in (mint + tea tree + clay + exfoliating = HAPPY!). Unlike the other two masks in the series, Jeju Volcanic & Hawaiian Pink Calamine, the texture of this mask is thin and almost watery ~ with gritty little bits swimming in a light green-gray clay mask  It also has a scent ~ of mint! I love mint, so this is a really nice aromatherapy experience as well as an exfoliating mask. This has a cooling sensation due to the mint in it, and it really feels nice on ~ even the dry down on the mask is pleasant as it does tighten my skin, but not in that horrible “I need to remove this mask now” feeling. After 10 minutes, I rinsed it off, massaging it into my skin as it contains little walnut powder bits ~ very fine ~ and that will help exfoliate my skin further. Verdict: My pores looked smaller, my face felt smoother plus refreshed as I still felt the cooling effects of the mint. It helped smooth out some small closed blemishes I had around my chin area and my face didn’t feel dry or stripped but hydrated.  Two thumbs up on this mask! [Purchase: Memebox | eBay ]

Ingredients: Water, Kaolin(34.9%), Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder (1%) , Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, Papain, Maltodextrin, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, Mentha Arvensis Powder (.08%), Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil (.01 ppm) , Montmorillonite  (1000ppm), Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Cellulose Gum, Hydroxyacetophenone, Chromium Oxide Greens, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, CI 77492, CI 77499, Fragrance  cosDNA analysis

Skin&Lab Dr. Pore Tightening : Glacial Clay Facial Mask This clay mask is made from glacial Canadian clay (3000mg), which will help remove dirt and unclog pores, while absorbing excess oil in your skin, along with 2 other types of clay ~ kaolin and bentonite to help detox. It also contains oatmeal, which will help soften and remove dead skin cells, while hydrating and moisturizing your skin, tea tree extract ~ which is an anti-bacterial and will help heal and soothe blemishes. This is a thick greenish clay mask where I can see the oatmeal grains and smell the tea tree extracts! Word of warning: if you have sensitive skin, under a special skin treatment or have dry skin, I would not recommend this mask. For us oily skinned people ~ this mask has an initial tingle for about 2 minutes that is quite intense ~ and then it just becomes a nice cooling clay mask. I love this mask in the summertime ~ I purchased my first tub last year and this is my second tub, as it is so refreshing and cooling. Just be careful that your skin type can tolerate the freeze!! It cleans out my pores and exfoliates, with the gentle oats in the scrub ~ after I rinse off the mask, my face feels cool and refreshed, my pores look smaller  [PurchaseMemebox | Wishtrend ]

I’m From Series

These masks are very versatile and all skin types can use them.   They have 3 different types for specific needs

I’m From Honey Mask   Forgot about that Farmacy Honey mask ~ go for this one if you want an intense moisturizing and soothing mask. It doesn’t warm up, but so what?  It won’t break you out and leaves your skin soft and smooth  This is my second jar that I purchased from Wishtrend. This is a deeply moisturizing and hydrating wash off mask that is made with real 38.7% herbal honey from Jiri Werl-Peyung Village in Korea. It looks like whipped honey and it smells just like honey too. This mask is so moisturizing and yes, even us oily-skinned gals need some deep moisturizing facial treatments. Honey is also great for treating acne, blemish prone skin, as it is a great anti-bacterial product. This also has propolis in it, which also helps combat oil and bacteria on your skin. This also has bee venom which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You can leave it on for as little as 10 minutes or as long as one hour ~ I usually leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. This mask never dries on your face and will be sticky ~ my face does feel more hydrated and I noticed that a blemish-to-be was reduced in size ~ maybe it will go back into hibernation! I really like this mask a lot!  [Purchase: Memebox | Wishtrend ]

I’m From Vitamin Tree Mask   Vitamin Tree is actually Sea Buckthorn  ~ it took me forever to figure that one out!!  This contains 11.5% of sea buckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides) leaves and 50.46% sea buckthorn  leaf tea, which I assume is water and leaves brewed together ~ so there isn’t plain ol’ water in here, but there is water ~ it just has been infused with the sea buckthorn.  The organically grown leaves are directly supplied by from Byeong-Pung Village, Taebaek Mt. in South Korea.   Sea Buckthorn  contains vitamins C, A and E, beta carotene, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids.  Vitamin C is important for brightening and stimulating collagen production.  It contains 200 to 800 times more vitamins than apples.  Sea Buckthorn is known for its antioxidant properties to help slow down aging and to regenerate new skin cells, while penetrating deep into your derma layer and locking moisture inside.  Normally, sea buckthorn would have a fishy odor, but I am SO happy to say this mask does not have that scent  ~ it is more like old brewed tea, which is fine.   The color is a dark vomit greenish brown that when it dries, it is dark brown.    The mask is a thick one and doesn’t have water in it, so can drop off in clumps while you are applying it ~ I just pick up the clumps and smooth it back into place.

This mask is rich in vitamins and it is a detox, purifying mask that will also soothe and calm your skin.  It is also supposed to brighten your skin as well ~ but I have only used it once, so I cannot say what the long term benefits are using this mask.  I will say that after keeping this mask on for 20 minutes, it was still soft ~ it does dry down, but not hard or cake-y ~ just a different color ~ you can see that the moisture has been sucked out of the mask, but it is still supple on my face.  Rinse VERY WELL.  In fact, I would recommend using this mask before you shower, because it does take a bit of work to remove all traces of it.   I don’t think this cleaned out my pores that well, but I will say that my pores looked smaller after using this mask.  The redness on my nose zit is lessened.  I like this mask well enough to continue using it and I will see if it helps clear out my pores better with future attempts.  [Purchase: Memebox | Wishtrend ]

Ingredients: hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) extract, glycerin, hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) leaf, caprylic/capric triglyceride, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, glyceryl stearate SE, beeswax,  sodium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate, polysorbate 60, sorbitan sesquioleate, stearyl alcohol,  saussurea involucrata (snow lotus ) extract, selaginella lepidophylla (Rose of Jericho) extract, rubus chamaemorus (cloudberry) fruit extract, hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) fruit extract, sodium hyaluronate, jojoba seed oil, magnesium alumnum silicate, xanthan gum, myristyl alcohol, allantoin, tocopheryl acedtate, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, caprylyl glycol, caprylhydroxamic acid, boswellia serrata (frankincense) resin extract, dipotassium glycrrhizate, disodium EDTA, panthenol, ethylhexylglycerin, ethyl ascorbyl ether (ethyl ascorbic acid)  cosDNA analysis

I’m From Volcanic Mask   I just purchased this and used it the other day ~ this is the 3rd and final mask from I’m From product line.  This is made with volcanic ash ~ 8.6% pure, natural volcanic rocks from Jeju’s Uhdeunggae Village ~  and clays to help remove dirt and excess oil, unclog pores and tighten pores. It will gently exfoliate your skin, removing dead skin cells, while lotus and ginseng extracts will soothe and brighten your skin tone.

This mask doesn’t have much of a scent to it, but it is a bouncy mask!  The clay is of a thick mousse like texture, very cool looking.  When I apply it to my face with the spatula, I feel like I am icing a cake!

This mask has a wonderful cooling effect as it dries and it doesn’t tighten my skin or make my skin feel itchy or uncomfortable.  After 30 minutes, I rinsed it off ~ it does rinse off very easily and I immediately noticed how much more brighter my skin tone became and my pores ~ what pores??  There are no pores!  Well, for now. This stuff really did clean out my pores, unclogged the gunk and my pores look invisible.  My skin feels very refreshed and matte, without being dry or stripped ~ and the texture of my skin is so smooth and silky.  I have to say, I probably like this ore than Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Clay Mask.  [Purchase: Memebox | Wishtrend ]

Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off  I never did a formal review on this mask at my blog as there are so many of these reviews ~ Any of the Skinfood Sugar Wash Off Masks (Original, Strawberry and Honey) are fantastic masks to try.  This series are more of a scrub than a mask for me ~ I apply the gelly-like sugar scrub to my face, massaging it in and I leave on for 3 to 5 minutes ~ and then rinse off, massaging again to exfoliate.  I find these masks to be very effective in exfoliation and also moisturizing.  This is a shower mask for me, meaning that I use it in the shower.  [Purchase: Memebox | Skinfood USAJolse | W2Beauty ]

Wonderuci Real Cacao Brightening Mask  This is a blast from the past!  I remember that I originally got this in a Cacao Box back in the Memebox Global days a few years ago.  Mine is now long gone, but this mask slightly warms up, smells just like sweet chocolate and looks like hot fudge.  It is a gooey, messy mask but it is so moisturizing and it brightens your skin tone, while smoothing the texture of your skin.  Now that I think about it, this will be one of the masks I purchase on Black Friday, as I really liked this a lot!  This is a great mask for oily skin. Elizavecca Kangsi Pack 24K Gold Pack I am not a huge fan of Elizavecca, but this gold mask pack is wonderful  ~  it  helps with uneven skin tone by brightening and reducing hyper-pigmentation, which will even out your skin tone.   I reviewed it originally here, but I will recap ~ this mask was sent to me for review purposes from Memebox:  It is also a balancing mask, so it will help reduce oiliness, while moisturizing.   This comes in a handy tube form, with a flip top lid, so it is easy to squeeze out and apply.  One of the complaints with “tub” products is that you have to stick your fingers or use a spatula to apply the product, so this is a step in the right direction for those who want to keep their facial products as hygienic as possible.  The first thing I notice when I applied it to my skin was its color.  It is a shimmering gold color and it is quite beautiful ~ it does look like liquid gold.  I feel like C-3PO!   It is not overly sticky, and it is easy to apply a thick layer on my skin.  The scent is very generic.  It reminds me of soap and it isn’t really anything great ~ just a soapy scent.  I wish it was more herbal, due to all of the wonderful herbs in this product, but for whatever reason, Elizavecca played it safe here.

Within seconds after applying, the thinner areas of the mask started to turn white.  As the mask dried on my face, I did not feel any major tightening or itchy sensations ~ this mask does not contain clay and it is more of a moisturizing/balancing mask.  It is not a detox mask as it does not have ingredients that I would associate with a deep pore cleaning mask.    After 20 minutes, the mask was completely white on my face and had dried down to a powder-like texture.  I then just rinsed off the mask with warm water.  I wasn’t expecting much from this mask, so I was very surprised to see that my pores appeared smaller!  I’ve used this mask several times and this is the case in every time ~ my pores look smaller and tighter.  I have not noticed a “brighter” complexion, but my face is hydrated and smooth.   Plus the PORES!! That is an unexpected benefit, as there is nothing in the product description that claims it helps with the appearance of pores.  I also feel this helps with my excess oil as well, as my face didn’t feel oily or greasy, but just moisturized.   [PurchaseMemebox | eBay ]
