Unboxing Birchbox The Mask Magic Kit

I no longer get the monthly Birchbox, but I keep my eye out for cool deals and limited edition boxes.  You know me ~ say masks and I run to check it out. The Mask Magic Kit ($20) had a mask that I have wanted to try for a long time, plus some items that I thought sounded pretty cool, so off I went to get it!

This came boxed ~ the box is a thin cardboard and is not sturdy like the monthly Birchbox, but I did like the color scheme and design ~ this box set has a nice presentation and would make a great gift.

One of our favorite beauty magic tricks? Popping on a mask and seeing how our skin immediately transforms. We filled this kit with our favorite mask miracle workers, including a quick-fix that makes skin more radiant in two minutes. Magical? We’d say so.

Informational Card

Liz Earle Brightening Treatment Mask  I am not impressed by Liz Earle’s cleanser, but masks might be a different story.   This is a detox clay mask, with hydrating aloe vera, soothing witch hazel and moisturizing sweet almond oil with a gentle exfoliator ~ lactic acid.  Not only did I get a nice sample size, but Liz Earle’s signature Pure Muslin Cloth as well.   Sample Size 15 mL RV $7.20  Pure Muslin Cloth RV $3.75

How to Use: Apply to clean, dry skin. Leave on up to 2 minutes. Wash away with warm water, ideally using Liz Earle’s Pure Muslin Cloth, and gently wipe away residue. Note: A slight tingling sensation is completely normal.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Montmorillonite, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, PEG-20 Stearate, Silt, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Panthenol, Cetearyl
Ethylhexanoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cinnamomum Camphora (Camphor) Oil,  Fragrance, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Linalool, Lactic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Sodium Methylparaben, Sodium Propylparaben cosDNA analysis

Hey Honey Take It Off Exfoliating Honey Peel Off Mask   I have tried this mask before and this is a peel off mask.  It is clear and does smell like alcohol, but you apply this sticky mask on your face, let it dry and then peel off ~ and your dead skin and gunk will be stuck on the mask!  It is pretty fun, although messy ~ I can never fully remove all of the mask properly and wind up washing my face.  Sample Size 10 mL RV $6.40

Description: When our skin is feeling meh (read: dull), we turn to this exfoliating honey mask from Hey Honey. It brightens dull skin and promotes a smooth, clear complexion with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that scrub away dead skin, reduce wrinkles, and improve the overall look and feel of skin. The concentration of AHAs is low so you can leave the mask on for up to twenty minutes for full benefits, without irritation. It’s also paraben-free

How to Use: Apply a light moisturizer to facial skin. Carefully apply a thin layer of the mask all over your face, avoiding the eye area, hairline, and eyebrows. Allow mask to dry completely (about 15–20 minutes). Gently peel mask off, starting at the edges and slowly peeling until completely removed. Reapply a light moisturizer.

Ingredients: Water (aqua), polyvinyl alcohol, alcohol, polysorbate 20, honey extract, glycerin, propanediol, caprylic/capric triglyceride, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, lactic acid, glycolic acid, lithospermum erythrorhizon root extract, carbomer, triethanolamine, panthenol, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, disodium EDTA  cosDNA analysis

Dr. Jart+ Dermask Firming Solution Body Heat Thermosensitive Cellulose Gel Mask Damn long mask name.   Dr Jart+ is an expensive K-Beauty brand that I rarely purchase (I do have a couple of items from them, but wow – they are expensive for no reason!)  This mask is pretty interesting, as it is supposed to release a gel that contains ingredients that will help bolster collagen and elastin production by your body heat ~ hence the name thermosensitive.  This mask is supposed to help firm and lift your skin!  Look for an IG mini review on this one RV $9.00 (yep, told you they were expensive)

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, Chondrus Crispus Powder, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil,Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Allantoin, Butylene Glycol, Beta-Glucan, Agar, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Adenosine, Disodium EDTA, Cupressus Sempervirens Leaf/Nut/Stem Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Ubiquinone, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Propylene Glycol, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide cosDNA analysis

Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off  Another K-Beauty product. This is a popular sugar wash off mask, that smells lemony (not sugary) and is quite grainy.  I have used this mask in the past ~ I owned the full size ~ and it is a pretty decent exfoliating scrubby mask.   Since this is made with sugar, it will dissolve quickly as you massage it in.  You first apply this mask on your face, leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse off, massaging the product while rinsing.  Normally you see samples of this in foil packets so this is a really cute change in a mini-tub.  Sample Size 10g RV $1.00

Description: Sugar grains make for an all-star exfoliator as they dissolve slowly upon application, removing those dead skin cells and blackheads. This hydrating formula—which can be mixed with water for a less abrasive feel—will reveal soft, radiant skin after a single use.

Ingredients: Sucrose, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocotte, Glycerin, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Lanolin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Sorbitan Laurate,  Butylparaben, BHT, Caramel, Fragrance cosDNA analysis

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel This is a pH neutral protein peel that will gently exfoliate dead skin, while your skin tone will be evened out and smoothing your skin, without irritation ~ without acids!  I am not sure if this will work or not, in fact, I think I had a sample in the past and wasn’t impressed enough to do a mini IG review. Use once a week, applying to clean dry skin ~ face, neck and décolletage.  Massage in a circular motion, gently and then rinse off with a cleanser.  Sample .17 oz  RV $4.80

Description:  Suitable for all skin types, this pH-neutral protein peel gently exfoliates delicate skin without the use of harsh acids or abrasives. The unique gel binds to dead skin cells on the face, neck, and décolleté, forming solids that can be easily washed away with water—all in just three minutes. Great for reducing the appearance of acne scars, dark spots, rosacea, and blotchiness

Ingredients: Water 75.55%, Glycerin 14.5%, PEG 5 Glyceryl Triisostearate 4.25%, Alkyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride 3.5%, Carbomer 1.25%, Hyaluroinc Acid .25%, PEG 40 Hydrogenated castor oil, PCA Isosteaerate .15%, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate .10%, DMDM Hydantoin .05%, Disodium EDTA .05%  cosDNA analysis

Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask  This is the main reason why I purchased this kit ~ I keep missing the samples from Sephora and I didn’t want to purchase the sampler kit because I have tried many of the masks in those kits already.  So, when I saw this item in this kit, I had to nab it!  I love cucumber products for their soothing properties and this not only has cucumber, but chamomile and aloe to boost this product’s soothing capibilities.   This also has papaya extracts which will help exfoliate your skin.  Birchbox recommends storing this in the frig to really get a nice cooling and soothing mask.   This is a nice size too at 1 oz  RV $10.40

How to Use: Apply a coat of gel to clean skin. Let sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Apply a thin layer and leave overnight for more intensive treatment. The gel can also be used under eyes to reduce puffiness and after sun exposure or facial extractions to calm irritated skin.

Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus (cucumber) Extract, Carica Papaya (papaya) Fruit Extract, Ananas Sativus (pineapple) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (whole Leaf Aloe Vera), Vaccinium Myrtillus (bilberry) Fruit Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (sugarcane) Extract, Acer Saccharum (sugar Maple) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (matricaria) Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (matricaria) Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (lemon) Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange) Extract, Glycerin, Sodium Pca, Allantoin, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Polyacrylate, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Polysorbate 20, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Blue 1 (CI 42090)  cosDNA analysis

The Organic Pharmacy Purifying Seaweed Clay Mask  This is a brand I have never heard of before and I have to say ~ purifying + seaweed + clay + mask = happy happy, joy joy!  Seaweed will help calm and soothe your skin, reducing redness and swelling, while clay will draw out any impurities and excess oil, unclog pores and provide a detox treatment for your skin.  This also has vitamin C and pine bark extracts ~ antioxidants that will help combat free radicals and reveal glowing skin.  Apply a thick layer to your skin and leave on for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.  Sample Size 7 mL RV $12.25

Ingredients: Water, Papaya (Papaya Proteolytic Enzyme), Bentonite Clay, Kaolin , Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis)*, Alcohol, Ceteryl Alcohol,Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, Benzyl Alcohol, Maltodextrin, Sorbitan Stearate , Papain, Angelica Acutiloba Root Extract,Bilberry (Vaccinum Myrtillus)*, Camphor, Saposhnikovia divaricata root extract, Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globulus*), Sodium Hydroxide, Salicylic Acid, Vitamin C(ascorbyl glucoside) , Thioctic Acid, Vitamin B5 (Tocopherol) , Sage (Salvia Officinalis)*, Sorbic Acid, Limonene , Pinus Pinaster Bark Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins, Spirulina, Linalool cosDNA analysis

This is a great sampler of masks ~ both Western and Asian brands are represented and also eco-friendly ones as well.   This box is $20.00 and I received a retail value of almost $55.00, so I think this is a pretty good deal.   If Birchbox continues to put together kits like these, I will purchase them from their store. I highly recommend The Mask Magic Kit  as a treat for yourself or a great gift!

  1. I love Dr. Jart + products when I get them, but considering they are so expensive that is hardly ever. I like the V7 Toning range and the masks from that collection are absolutely amazing. How did you get on with this one?
