Ice Ice Baby ~ Mega Cool Down Products: Part 1

It is SO hot right now.  And it is the humid type of heat ~ not as bad as tropical heat, that is for sure, but bad enough.  Like moving thru a wet hot towel.    Dry heat is a bit better, but then all moisture is sucked out of your skin.  Humid ~ lots of moisture and LOTS of oil too!  Sticky, hot, sweaty.  That’s summer!  And even though it is only the end of May, Summer just hit my neck of the woods in the Northeast full force.  Up in the 90’s this weekend.    With that depressing intro, I decided to do a brain dump of cooling products that I have used and enjoy ~ and while I was putting this together, I discovered that one of my favorites is discontinued, so I went looking for a replacement ~ I think I found one, but that will be in Part 2 (coming soon this summer!!)  This is a LONG blog post, as I love my cooling products and own so many!

I am going to start with the feet and move my way up to the face with the products. With the exception of the foot and body products, I highly recommend storing your items in the frig for a more intense cooling experience.  You will thank me later.   I will post the ingredients list at the very end of this blog post as well and if I reviewed/unboxed the product in the past, I will link to that when I mention the product name.

Warm weather means one of 3 choices for your feet ~ barefoot, sandals or shoes with hose or socks.  Either way, your feet are going to get dirty and sweaty.  Here are some of my favorite products to clean and refresh your feet. Jasmine Seven Fresh Foot wipes are cooling, refreshing and smell minty!  I keep a pack of these at my desk at work because sometimes I walk at lunchtime and it is dusty and dirty out there.  These help quickly wipe away any dirt, sweat and oil on my feet, dry quickly and give my feet a tingling cooling sensation.  Moisturizing too, as they have aloe and glycerin ingredients ~ you can also use these for your hands or anywhere else you need to clean off and cool down!   Foot sprays!  Love them ~ you can make your own too ~ just toss some witch hazel, rubbing alcohol and some drops of a minty essential oil (spearmint, peppermint, wintergreen..), some tea tree, citrus and rosemary essential oils in a small spray bottle  and you have a refreshing, cooling and antibacterial foot spray.  If you don’t have time or the ingredients, there are many foot sprays out there ~ I personally love Missha’s Ginger Vinegar Deo Foot Mist  ~ ginger lily, neem, lotus and fermented ginger ~ can’t get better than this ~ it doesn’t smell like vinegar at all (it does have a strong initial alcohol scent),  and it is very refreshing on my feet, plus it deodorizes.   The Lassha Cool Foot spray is another one I really love ~ full of herbal and citrus oils, but I cannot find it online and I am down to the last drop.. If anyone knows where I can get that, let me know in the comments 🙂

And finally, a triple mint foot cream by The Saem ~ Mint Jungle, in fact!  This is a nice lightweight foot cream, which is why it is my warm weather foot cream ~ it isn’t too heavy or greasy and it absorbs quickly, making it perfect as you apply this cream, no wait time and slip on your sandals.  It is made with spearmint, peppermint and apple mint, very refreshing and cooling ~ and it has honey and glycerin, for moisturizing.  Smells minty-sweet!

Gels and lotions ~ I need cooling products for my body!  Start with the shower ~ cooling shower gels ~ a classic favorite is Holika Holika Aloe Vera Shower Gel.  It smells like cucumbers and aloe and it is so refreshing and soothing on your skin ~ and yes, this is a favorite, because I featured it last year in my much shorter refresh blog post.   Another shower gel that I like is Naruko Tea Tree Shine Control & Blemish Clear shower gel.  This lathers up nicely and if you suffer from blemishes or rashes on your body, I highly recommend this gel. Very affordable and you don’t need a lot.   However, MY ABSOLUTE favorite is a new discovery ~ Olbas Herbal Bath Wash.  Now, I love Dr Bronner’s Peppermint Body Wash  and that would have made the cut ~ don’t get me wrong, that is still a great body wash… but,  Olbas beats the living daylights out of Dr Bronner’s, in my humble opinion.   Like Dr Bronner’s, this is a liquid watery wash so it doesn’t foam up really well.  In fact, what I do is first cleanse with other products, rinse off and then add to a dampened washcloth a bit of the green Olbas liquid.  It is SO PUNGENT in a fantastic herbal mint way ~ you can smell this a mile away and it clears out your sinuses!  Using this on my body is wonderful ~ my skin actually gets cooler and tingles with the lovely selection of mint oils in this product.  My skin is still cool and refreshed when I dry off.    If you love minty icy goodness, pick up some Olbas and enjoy..  If you aren’t into the frozen experience, Dr Bronner’s is a good substitute ~ it is cooling but it is not as intense like like Olbas.   I actually own the Olbas essential oil blend, and it is my go-to product to help with my sinuses and also rub into my temples when I feel a headache coming on.

Soothing and cooling gels come in cactus, cucumber, aloe vera and bamboo ~ the one featured here is by Beyond ~ Jeju Bamboo 96% ~  an eco-friendly S. Korean brand and I love the refreshing and cooling gel, that has great skin benefits because of the silica in bamboo ~ silica will strengthen your collagen and elastin, which in turn will help firm and tone your skin and plump up your skin.   Bamboo also is a very soothing ingredient that is good for sensitive skin, as it is an anti-irritant, retains moisture and helps combat free radicals as it does contain anti-oxidant proprieties as well.  This is very hydrating and dries quickly on my skin.  For days where I need more moisture, Nature Republic’s Aloe Vera 90% Body Cream is amazing ~ seriously ~ it has a wonderful aloe scent and it is cooling on my skin, while moisturizing.  No tacky residue either.   Aloe contains a major punch of hydration and is an antioxidant, so you will see this ingredient in a lot of cooling and soothing products.   I received this in a Beauteque Head to Toe bag ~ I wish they would do those again ~ and I have repurchased this item several times already.

Liquid Refreshers

Another product from Beyond made it in my cooling roundup, this time from their Apple Mint collection. Their facial oil cleanser didn’t do a great job removing my makeup, but I loved the sparkling and vivacious citrus scent so much that is a repeat purchase.  Beyond’s Apple Mint Fresh Cleansing Water has the same tangerine scent and it is also very cooling, as it does contain applemint.   This has a pH level of about 4.5 to 5, so it is pretty skin friendly there!   Another liquidy refreshing skin cleanser is for your hands ~ you still pick up so many germs from the many outdoor picnics and activities in the summer time, and I reach for my ultimate favorite hand sanitizer.  This in my ultimate favorite scent ~ Kosmatology Herbal Fresh Hand Sanitizer. This bottle has been redesigned so it has a spray top instead of the twist off cap (shown), which is fantastic.  The scent is so crisp and minty ~ a sweet type of mint as they use spearmint which is more mellow and not as sharp as peppermint.  Rosemary is a fantastic antibacterial herb  and while this does contain alcohol, it is not drying nor does it smell like alcohol ~ very cooling on my hands.

Face Packs

The trio here are facial packs ~ two are wash off packs and one is a sleeping (overnight) pack. I will start with the wash off packs ~ I received my first tub of Nature Republic Fresh Vegetable Pack last year from Memebox’s Food Ingredients box ~ it is a HUGE tub, but I have decanted so much of it for friends and family, that I had to purchase another one!  It is that popular. This jelly is a harder jelly and it has “memory” ~ it reminds me so much of the wonderful Innisfree Jeju Sudachi Soothing Mask (discontinued) and when you break it up in pieces, the jelly will settle again, leaving a smooth surface in the tub..  This has a slew of veggie ingredients that are going to hydrate, moisturize, brighten, soothe, nourish and cool your skin. This contains 6,000 mg of organic vegetable extracts, which are rich in nutrition and vitamins.  This has astringents, plus moisturizers, emolliants, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients.  This grapefruit citrus scented jelly is VERY refreshing and soothing on my skin.

Next up is a Taiwanese brand, Annie’s Way and their Aloe Anti-Acne Jelly Mask.  Now, I know some don’t like jelly wash off mask packs, but this one works really well for me ~ not only is it invigorating (ahh, aloe scent) and cools my skin, but it does help with soothing and reducing swelling from blemishes.  I can see this being really lovely if you get a sunburn as well, as it is so refreshing.   The texture of this jelly is very gloppy and thick and feels great when it has been in the frig for a few hours.

It was actually me digging out my LAST tub of Secret Key Intense Ice Sleeping Pack that caused me to go into a panic for cooling products.  I was first introduced to this item a couple of years ago via Memebox Global and I have been using it for 2 summers now ~ I purchased 2 more tubs of the Ice pack off eBay, so this is it.  My last one.  It was a tradition for 2, now going on 3,  years to use this sleeping pack during the hot, humid months and now, no mas.  It is discontinued.  Insert Sad Face here.  This sleeping pack is so cooling, yet it was very moisturizing too ~ my skin would be super soft when I woke up and it really helped bring the heat down on my face while I was sleeping.   The texture of this pack is a gel-cream and it smells like ice-cold peppermint and it is my LAST ONE.   So, I did go out and look for something else ~ do you know that cooling sleeping packs are HARD TO FIND??  What the hay, Korea brands?  What’s going on here?  I did FIND one that sounds promising (watch them discontinue that now ~ it is the Nature Republic Real Squeeze Aloe Vera Ice Pack) and have ordered it ~ it is one that you put in the freezer ~ and will be part of part 2 blog post on Mega Cool Down products.   BTW ~ you can find Secret Key Intense Ice Sleeping Pack in some Asian online shops that do not ship to the USA, so if you want to try it or stock up, and can order from those shops, go for it.  You will love this.

Doesn’t this photo make you cooler by just looking at it? I want to dive into this pile of goo!!

Misting my face is something I do a lot in the summertime ~ and I have also included a nice body mist as well.  Skinfood Facial Ice Vita Mist is part of the Vita line, and they do have a Vita C mist ~ which can be a good substitute for this one, as the Ice version is hard to find in USA markets.  This has  fruit and veggie ingredients, which pack a powerhouse of vitamins and antioxidants:  carrot, tomato, apple, cabbage, broccoli, celery, asparagus, raspberry, cranberry, açaí, strawberry, spinach, alfalfa and pomegranate ~ as well as witch hazel, which will tighten pores.  This has a very light fruity scent, and very cooling and refreshing on the skin.  Ola is a Hawaiin indie brand that I stumbled across and I would LOVE to purchase more from them, except ~ Hawaii shipping rates to the states… Now I know how Hawaiians feel when they try to get products from the mainland.  I will repurchase Ola Pono Hawaiian Herbal Mist however, as it is a wonderful lemongrass and ginger aroma scent that is refreshing on my skin and the scent calms and relaxes me. It is made with the distilled botanicals of Noni fruit, Mamaki leaf, Sugar Cane and Aloe Vera and leaves your skin hydrated as well.

This is a facial toner, but because its applicator is a spray mist, I find myself using this to cool down and help reduce redness and swelling ~ cosRX makes their first appearance here in my Cool Down Mega post with their Centella Water Alcohol Free Toner (pH 6.20)   This toner  helps with normalizing the pH levels for my skin. This is toner is scentless and can be used over your makeup, during the day, to refresh and moisturize your skin.   I honestly didn’t think much of it as a “toner”, but as a hydrating and refreshing facial mist, I love it!

Mah Face Lotions

I don’t know how my witch hazel product got in this family photo! Maybe because I mix it with the aloe vera gel?  Anyway, the point of showing you my eco-friendly, organic Madre Labs Witch Hazel and Mountain Rose Herbs Aloe Vera Gel is that these products are very versatile and help refresh, cool down, reduce redness from rashes, insect bites, cuts, blemishes, tighten pores and moisturize the heck out of you ~ full of antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids and other good stuff for your face!  This two items are used in my various DIY experiments and I recommend that you find yourself some good organic witch hazel and aloe vera products to create your own skin creations on the cheap!  Add essential oils to the mix and you get an even more bracing, icy experience to your skincare products.   Madre Labs Witch Hazel also comes in a Rose version (for you rose fans out there) ~ check out my shopping links below ~ at iHerbs, Madre Labs Witch Hazel is at a “try me” price of $1.00 ~ and for 355 mL ~ iHerbs ships worldwide too.

And MORE aloe!! haha  I do find these two products to be different, so I wanted to give options.  cosRX makes another appearance here with their Aloe Vera Soothing Gel (pH 6.30) ~ This is a lightweight essence made with aloe and sodium hyaluronate, so it is not only soothing, but very moisturizing.  They make a more heavy duty aloe vera product, Aloe Vera Oil-Free Moisture Cream (pH 6.5), so if you have dry skin but need to cool down, that is also a good item to try by cosRX.   I love the soothing gel as it is more lightweight, so it is more suited to my oily skin and I can still layer my products ~ this is a great item to toss in your bag, because it is multi-purpose ~ helps with rashes, sunburns, cuts and inflammation.

Benton makes a lovely Aloe line and in this blog post, I am featuring their Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel ~ this is different from cosRX because of the propolis ~ propolis is from honeybees and it is the resinous substance or “bee glue” that helps with blemishes, cuts, rashes, speeds up healing, is an antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory product and most people love it!  It helps bring radiance back to your face and the mixture of propolis and aloe is sheer genius ~ it is a powerful punch of antioxidants, anti-aging and anti-blemish combination!  This is a gel moisturizer that would be considered the emulsion step as it is before the actual moisturizing cream.  Now, that is the tube version there ~ I know this comes in a pump applicator as well, as I have that too.  Don’t be confused if you see it in a tube or pump version ~ they are the same great product inside.

Masks are the quickest way to cool down my face and I have several here that are really nice. Mint obviously is my first choice, but bamboo and cucumber are fantastic as well ~ as they are very hydrating and soothing.  Succulents are also fantastic ~ aloe and cactus are great cooling and moisture packed ingredients.  Let’s start out with my absolute damn favorite cooling mask EVER (I cannot stress this enough).  I love this mask so much that it prompted my first EVER “I’m devoting a full blog post on one mask” review ~ My Scheming Mint Collagen Soothing Mask.   This is another Taiwan brand and My Scheming is an unsung hero of facial sheet masks ~ they are drenched in essence, their mask sheets are thin, but not too thin, smell great and I can wear them for an hour with no problems.    These are made with watermint and you can smell the lovely mint scent, plus it is an astringent as well.  This is packed with great ingredients ~ algae, hyaluronic acid, mulberry bark, licorice and collagen.   I was in despair for a while ~ I purchased these initially on Yes Style back in 2014, they quickly stopped carrying them, I went to eBay to purchase more and then around late summer 2015, I noticed that the stock was drying up.  Beautius came to the rescue recently and they are carrying these masks (but are now sold out)  But I discovered that Yes Style is now carrying them again. Stock up!

If you cannot find My Scheming Mint Collagen, My Beauty Diary makes a nice substitute for it ~ Cooling Mask.  This is also a Taiwan brand and it is very refreshing and rejuvenating (just like it says on the package!) ~ it contains aloe, calendula, amica and other soothing ingredients. Let’s go green ~ onto veggies ~ Sasa makes a plush facial sheet mask and I love their Honey Peach mask (despite that there is no honey in that mask ~ lol).  I purchased several of their brands, including their Cucumber and it has that same lovely plush material in the mask and the essence is almost a milky white.  Very soothing.   I am normally not a fan of Missha masks, but I love their 3D Bamboo Sheet Mask ~ again, bamboo contains silica so it really helps repair and strengthen your skin. The mask is not the best material, but it is a 3D mask, so it is bit more “crisp” as it has those seams.  I know it fits fine on my big face, so if you have a smaller face, you might want to steer clear of this one.

Now onto … Succulents! Love these fleshy plants ~ Hanaka Cactus (prickly pear) Hyaluronic Acid Hydration Mask is SO soothing and hydrating and the fit is really nice as well ~ their masks are made from 100% Japanese natural wood pulp fiber, so it is eco-friendly decomposable.  I do have to rave about Memebox’s brand Bon Vivant Aloe Vera Botantical Mask Pack.  I admit I was skeptical when they decided to come out with their own skincare line, but WOW, this one is fantastic.  It is made with an aloe vera botanical fiber mask sheet (which is why it is a brownish color) and uses aloe vera juice as the primary ingredient instead of water.  It fits beautifully, really refreshes and tingles my skin. Two thumbs up on this mask!

I hope you enjoyed my damn big post on Cooling products ~ I knew I had to start finding my items and then using them, as my needs in summer force me to try cooling products that help hydrate without oiliness.  If I only had to pick a few items off this list ~ Olbas Herbal Body Wash would be leading the pack, and My Scheming Mint Collagen Soothing Mask, Annie’s Way Aloe Anti-Acne Jelly Mask and Beyond Apple Mint Fresh Cleansing Water.   I also love mint products A LOT (as you probably can tell), but I love aloe and other succulents plant ingredients too, as they not only cool, but moisturize and soothe. In Part 2, I will have more items from Beyond, Skinfood, Holika Holika, Innisfree, Benton, Yes Cucumbers and Nature Republic!   What cooling skincare products do you use?  Have any good recommendations or DIY recipes?  Let me know in the comments below ~ I am always looking for new cooling products 🙂

Don’t forget to refresh and hydrate your insides ~ make your own flavored water ~ use cucumber slices and mint leaves in water or freshly sliced strawberries and basil leaves.  Lemon slices, blueberries and crushed sage leaves in water is also very refreshing.
