Once I saw this amazing set a few months ago on Commleaf’s Instagram feed, I knew I wanted it ~ not just for the presentation, although I must admit that is what first caught my attention, but the description for the Skin Relief products. I was lucky enough to receive the products for review purposes. I have posted about Commleaf in the past (read review here) and am so happy to try more from their brand!
Skin type/concerns: Oily, aging, blemish prone, pores, hyper-pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
I received these products complementary to review and was not paid. All reviews are my own honest opinion and I never have been asked to write copy for a brand. This blog post might contain promo codes, affiliate and referral links, which using my links will help generate a small commission that helps support my blog at no extra cost to you.
I have to have a section on the packaging, as it is so stunning. These bottles and jars are made from heavy glass that has been tinted a teal-green shade. They all have “wavy” sides, but it is more apparent on the bottles ~ the way these are designed, it is also feels ergonomically correct in my hand as well. The products do not have 4 sides, but five, as they are cut into a pentagon shade. Commleaf chose this design as it is meant to represent the five essential nutrients: carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and lipids (fat/oil) and the five factors for skin balance: wrinkles, firmness, brightening, oil/moisture balance and soothing. Each container has the Commleaf logo embossed on the side and the toner and gel-cream have bright silver caps, with the Commleaf logo. The packaging is eco-friendly.
The Skin Relief Series all have the same key ingredients: Aloe vera is a powerful moisturizer that doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily or greasy. It soothes, treats inflammation, helps speed up skin healing and also has a plethora of antioxidants ~ beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, helping improve your skin’s firmness while keeping your skin moist and hydrated. It also contains over 75 different nutritious ingredients, including minerals, enzymes, amino acids, salicylic acid and much more. Green tea is full of powerful anti-oxidants, due to its high concentration of polyphenols: catechins, tannins, flavonoids ~ which are anti-bacterial agents as well as acting as an astringent, retains skin moisture and hydration. Green tea helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Centella asiatica is a common herbal ingredient that is used medicinally to help speed up wound healing, such as blemishes and skin rashes. It is rich in saponins and is an anti-inflammatory, calming your skin. It also helps minimize the appearance of pores. Lavender has amazing wound healing proprieties due to its antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory compounds. It is also is a soothing and invigorating ingredient.
Tea tree is used for many infections and diseases due to its healing and disinfectant properties ~ antibacterial, fungicide, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antiviral and can help speed up wound healing and reduce scarring, as it is a cicatrisant. It helps with preventing dry, flaky skin and because of its antibacterial properties, can help heal current blemishes while reducing future blemishes and control excess oil. It helps with rashes, allergic skin reactions and fungal infections. Job’s Tears (coix lacryma-jobi) is also known as Chinese barley, pearl barley, adlay millet. This ingredient is an anti-inflammatory and will help reduce redness and swelling, along with helping to detox and firm your skin. It also contains coixenolide, a fatty acid, which helps reduce blemishes and hyper-pigmentation as it can inhibit the melanin production of your skin. Job’s Tears are also rich in iron, phosphorus and calcium minerals as well as a trio of B vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin) and niacin is known for its skin brightening properties.
Chamomile can calm down the skin and relieve redness effectively as it has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to relieve skin issues and irritations because it soothes and lessens swelling and redness, while healing skin and stimulating cellular renewal. Jasmine helps moisture without clogging pores, as it has antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral benefits, making it a good ingredient for blemish prone and oily skin. It balances moisture while protecting it as it is an antioxidant as well.
A patented ingredient ~ BIODTOX ~ will hydrate, exfoliate and reduces the appearance of pores. BIODTOX is compounded from antioxidant, anti-inflammatory bioflavonids; antioxidant, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory sulforaphane and anti-oxidant polyphenol ~ where the latter two items ingredients are found in broccoli. These products are rated level green from EWG’s Skin Deep database and its fragrance is just amazing. It is from eucalyptus and it is such a nice refreshing scent ~ it isn’t full on eucalyptus, but has a soft herbal blend to it, which is probably due to the lavender extracts. The scent does disappear quickly, for those who don’t like eucalyptus blends. There is no added coloring these products ~ it is just the glass that is that lovely shade of teal blue-green.
Soothing Toner: This toner is what I like to call a bouncy toner ~ it is watery, but there is a good slip and texture to it. The bottle is huge and impressively heavy ~ it has a standard pin hole applicator. Not only does this have all of the key ingredients, but it also has 2 hydrating humectants ~ glycerin and sodium hyaluronate ~ to really give your skin some hydration while attracting and binding moisture to your skin.
I like to pat this on my face with my hands, instead of using a cotton pad. My skin just drinks it up and I actually like to do a couple of layers. This does not leave a sticky or tacky residue and dries down quickly. Like all of the products in this line, it is very cooling and refreshing ~ this is a drink of water for my skin and helps tone down my redness. This has a pH level of 6.5 to 7 and it increases my moisture levels by 34% and decreased my oil levels by 29%. This toner does not mattify my skin ~ in fact, none of the items in this line are mattifying.
Soothing Toner Ingredients: Purified Water, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate, Centella Asiatica Extract, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Polyglyceryl-10 Myristate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Tea Tree Extract, Lavender Extract, Matricaria Flower Extract, Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Jasmine Extract, Broccoli Extract, Bioflavonoid, Propanediol, Eucalyptus Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate cosDNA
🌿Fresh Serum: This is a mini-me of the huge toner ~ same bottle design but about a 1/3 of the size! This also has an eye drop applicator. This serum is really nice and watery ~ more watery than the toner, in my opinion.
In fact, this has an ingredient that I haven’t paid a lot of attention to and perhaps I should! Glyceryl glocoside is comprised of glycerol and glucose, both very hydrating ingredients. Now, there is a protein in our bodies called aquaporin-3, which is essential for water molecules to move across your skin cells, providing skin hydration. Glyceryl glucoside plays a key role in aiding aquaporin-3 proteins, improves the skin barrier and it considered to be a next generation moisturizing ingredient (source + source)
This is a very lightweight and very hydrating serum, which absorbs quickly into my skin with no sticky or tacky residue. I found this serum to be very refreshing and calming as well to my skin, reducing redness.
It has a pH level of 4 , which means it is mildly acidic and skin balancing and it increases my moisture level by 82% while reducing my oils by 62%
Fresh Serum Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glyceryl Glucoside, Centella Asiatica Extract, Acrylate/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Polyglyceryl-10 Myristate, Ammonium Acryloyl Methyl Taurate/VP Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Tea Tree Extract, Lavender Extract, Matricaria Flower Extract, Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Jasmine Extract, Broccoli Extract, Bioflavonoids, Propanediol, Eucalyptus Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate cosDNA
🌿Moisture Cream: Don’t let the name fool you ~ this is a gelly!! It pretty much is a gelly form of the serum (give or take a few ingredients). It comes in a nice squat jar and I use a spatula to remove the contents. It is very jiggy jelly, so it is a bit of an undertaking to keep it on the spatula!
This is quite surprisingly nice and hydrating, without a sticky or tacky residue ~ BUT only if you use the proper amount. If you use too much of this Moisture Cream, it is very sticky and tacky on the skin. My advice is to start out with a pea sized amount and layer. This is probably the only product where I would say if you have dry or combo-dry skin, you might not find this adequate for your hydrating and moisturizing needs. For oily skin types, this is lightweight enough to layer with other moisturizers and in the warmer months, this would be enough as your moisturizer. This increased my moisture levels by 81% and reduced the oils by 24%.
Moisture Cream Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Centella Asiatica Extract, Acrylate/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Polyglyceryl-10 Myristate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Tea Tree Extract, Lavender Extract, Matricaria Flower Extract, Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Jasmine Extract, Broccoli Extract, Bioflavonoids, Propanediol, Potassium Hydroxide, Eucalyptus Leaf Oil, Sodium Hyaluronate cosDNA
Commleaf Skin Relief series lives up to its name ~ these three products calm, hydrates and soothes my skin without a greasy residue. This is not a mattifying product line, but more bringing your skin’s moisture/oil balance into alignment. These products are so refreshing and hydrating, and the scent is just amazing ~ so aromatherapeutic! I totally recommend these and you should start out with the Fresh Serum, as that is AMAZING. If you have drier skin or are looking for more moisturization, Commleaf has a Vitarice line, made with fermented rice. I have those products as well, so look for another review on that line soon!
