Unboxing Memebox Mini K-Beauty Haircare Kit!

I was introduced to Lador hair care brand thru other subscription services, but it was hard to find the brand here stateside for the longest time.   Memebox is now carrying it and I purchased a couple of items ~ their hair pack and scalp treatment ~ and was really pleased with them.  Memebox came out with what they called a “mini” haircare box ~ which I don’t view as mini, quite frankly ~ featuring Lador products.  I actually purchased two of these boxes from Memebox when they first came out and they sent me the wrong Mini Boxes 😦  At that time, it was sold out, but within a few days, it was restocked, so I ordered 2 more!  I am glad I was able to get in on this kit, as I think it is one of the better “Mini” boxes that Memebox has offered.   All this for TEN DOLLARS!!  For point of reference, I have baby fine, oily hair that is very straight.  I do color my hair monthly, blow dry daily and use a ton of products (see my hair products blog post here)   I really do not have any major issues except my hair is limp!

Informational Card

Damage Protector Acid Shampoo   This is a normal looking, slightly yellowish shampoo, that does smell like baby powder to me.  It is a generic scent and I really do not have strong feelings for it one way or another ~ it is lightly scented, so that is probably why.  If this had been strongly baby powder scented, I would have been very displeased!  I use both the shampoo and conditioning treatment once or twice a week, as they are very rich and moisturizing.   This has a good lather and I feel it works okay for me.  It isn’t the most exciting shampoo in the world and I won’t repurchase when I am done with it.   A key ingredient to this shampoo is

Argan Oil , which comes from a tree that is found in southwestern Morocco.   Damaged hair, especially hair that has been colored, benefits from argan oil ~ it helps make hair shine, prevent fly-aways (frizzies) and also protects hair from being damaged further.   Your hair is made up of proteins, fats (lipid), water, melanin and one of the main proteins is keratin, of which is responsible for 65 to 95 percent of your hair weight.  Keratin gives your hair elasticity, shape and strength.  When Argan oil is introduced to your hair, it will help reduce the protein loss to your hair, due to the oleic and linoleic acids found in argan oil.   Studies have shown that the introduction of argan oil will help reduce damage to your hair, especially damage caused by coloring.   (source from Scientific Research, Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications)

As some of the Lador products have a pH rating for them and it is clearly printed on the containers, I decided to do a pH test on those particular hair care products.  This test is not for your actual hair, as your hair is just dead cells, but more for your scalp.   The Damage Protector Acid Shampoo claims that it has a pH of 4.5 ~ I dipped my strip directly into the shampoo, undiluted, and came up with a pH level closer to 5.   Again, this is not an exact science for me, as these are strips you can purchase at amazon and anyone can do this, but I do feel that my results is within Lador’s claim of pH 4.5

You can purchase the 150 mL bottle at Memebox for $8.00

Hydro LPP Treatment   Moving on to the conditioner treatment product, this is item is specifically made for colored treated and/or permed hair.  I do color my hair and it can be a bit dry at times, especially the ends of my hair.  Hydro LPP ~ I have no idea what LPP stands for, unlike OPP (yeah, you know me) ~ but maybe it has to do with proteins or something.  Anyway, just like the Damage Protector Acid Shampoo, this has that generic baby powder scent, which thankfully isn’t strong.    I am a scent person, so when I smell something that is a generic scent, I kinda think cheap-o-la.   But in this case, nope, nopers!  This is a fantastic deep conditioning treatment that I use once or twice a week ~ it leaves my hair soft, smooth, silky and shiny ~ the ends of my hair looks like new hairs, not old and tired out ones!!  My hair does not feel heavy or weighted down with this product and I will continue to look for it at Memebox, as it is a great deep conditioning treatment for me.   Some key ingredients:

  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil is a rich occlusive ~ full of essential fatty acids, olive oil will directly penetrate the hair cuticle with moisture.
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil will help boost moisture levels in your hair as well protecting your hair from UV rays
  • Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract is rich in beta carotene and  antioxidant properties and will help protect your scalp, as it naturally has a low SPF.  It contains vitamin E and will help stimulate the production of natural healthy oils in your dry scalp.  The bright color of the conditioner is probably helped by this ingredient, as it is very yellow.
  • Collagen in hair care products cannot make your hair grow faster or thicker or change the structure of your hair, but they can provide a temporary  allusion to thicker and fuller hair, as it will coat each strand of hair.

Wow, is this product a bright egg yolk yellow color!  It is also very thick as well and you don’t need a lot of it to cover your hair.  I massage it in and leave in for 3 to 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Again, Lador states that this is a 4.5 pH level and it was a bit difficult to test this as the treatment is a yellowish thick product.  I did swish it around in some water to get it diluted, so my readings are closer to 5.5 ~ 6 but that is probably because of my tap water.   At any rate, the pH level is for your scalp more than your hair, imho.

You can purchase a 150 mL for $10.00 at Memebox

Yeah, I have some Star Wars Pop Funko toys.  They are props.  I use them

Living in the cold frigid lands of Hoth, Wampa needs some deep conditioning.

Perfect Hair Fill Up Ampoule   I received this last year in my October 3B box and actually wrote up a huge blog post on hair treatments for oily, fine hair and this item was included in that blog post (read here).   I will repeat what I wrote then

This is a hair treatment that will come in handy in the winter time, where moisture is just sucked out of the air and I might need a little more TLC with this repair treatment with silk amino acids, collagen, ceramide and keratin.  You mix one ampoule with equal parts cold water, mix until it becomes creamy.  Then you massage it into your hair and rinse after 20 minutes.  Each ampoule is 13 mL and depending on your hair length and texture, one ampoule could be 1 to 2 uses.  In my case, up to 3 uses.

This product is very watery coming out of its tube ~ I only used 1/2 of the tube contents, as I have shorter hair and I didn’t want or need to apply this all over my hair, but just to the roots of my hair.   I added equal amount of cold water ~ it must be cold ~ and stirred it up in a little bowl.  It quickly thickened and turned into a creamy white thick conditioner.

It does smell like a generic conditioner, nothing bad, but nothing to write home about either.  It feels very thick and oily when I applied this to the ends of my hair and I left it on for 30 minutes.   When I rinsed it out of my hair, I could feel the difference between where I applied this product and where I didn’t ~ my hair felt slick and smooth where La’dor was applied.   I did blow dry out my hair afterwards and the ends of my hair were silky and very soft.   Too soft for me!!  I felt that this product was a bit too softening for my hair, as I already have fine, soft hair.  I probably used too much of this product and next time, I will only use 1/4 of the tube instead of 1/2.   I think does a great job coating my hair with keratin, collagen and other good stuff without weighting it down or feeling greasy ~ but it is not a treatment I would use on a weekly basis.   The silky coating feeling on the ends of my hair lasted about 4 days before it was finally rinsed out ~ and I washed my hair daily.   I think this product is perfect for those with coarser hair, more dry hair or hair that is really damaged.    Full-Size 13 mL  RV $4.00 at Memebox

Luke needs to treat his scalp, cause wearing headgear all the time is not scalp-healthy!

Scalp Scaling Spa Hair Ampoule  I love my Innisfree Green Tea and Mint Scaling Ampoule, but I am interested in Lador’s version of a scaling ampoule ~ Innisfree (review here) version is a liquid and this one is a creamy product. You massage it into your scalp just like the Innisfree product ~ BUT unlike the Innisfree version, which goes on dry hair (before you shampoo), this product is added after your shampoo your hair and your hair must be wet.   Leave on for 3 minutes, rinse off and then condition as usual.  I haven’t used this one yet, but if it anything like the Scalp Hair Pack, I will enjoy this.   This is a creamy product with a lovely scent ~ it is a light, refreshing mint scent, not overpowering.

This product has an ingredient that is rare to me, so I was curious and found out that it is an anti-microbial.

Hinokitiol (β-thujaplicin), a tropolone-related compound found in the heartwood cupressaceous plants, is widely used in hair tonics, tooth pastes, cosmetics, and food as an antimicrobial agent.  (source)

This also has salicylic acid which will help reduce flaking and excess oil on your scalp.  Why are these types of treatments important?  I had written about it in my hair treatments blog post, but I repeat it again here

To remove build up, refresh and de-grease.   Our hair is “dead”, but our scalp is alive and we do not give enough attention to it, and over time, hair product buildup and dead skin cells will make your hair look greasy and dull, and it will slow down your hair growth. Shampooing cannot do a good deep cleanse, so doing a detox/scaler treatment for your scalp will unclog the pores, remove dead skin and product buildup.   This will help stimulate your hair growth as your hair follicles will be clean and unclogged.

You can purchase these 15 mL ampoules for $4.00 at Memebox.

Description: Give your hair the perfect at home spa treatment, this ampoule delivers the amazing effects of professional salon hair spa in the comfort of your own home. Ingredients: Water, Alcohol, Tocopherol Acetate, Camellia Sinensis Extract, Butylene Glycol, Salicylic Acid, Panax Ginseng Extract, Cnidium Officinale Root Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Acorus Calamus (sweet flag)  Root Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract, Hinokitiol, Niacinamide, Polyoxyethylene Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil  cosDNA.com analysis

Chewie’s Secret to his lovely flowing hair?  Probably Lador’s Eco Before Care Keratin PPT!

Eco Before Care Keratin PPT    I also received this in a past subscription service just recently and I will repeat my original write up plus new thoughts after using this product

This is a keratin and collagen protein spray that will help coat your hair cuticles to strengthen it.  It will also help with bringing a natural shine and luster, pH balances your hair (not sure what that means!) while making your hair soft, bouncy and tangle free.  It also will lock in moisture so your hair will not dry out and prevents further damage.  You spray this to your hair on freshly washed, damp hair and then comb thru.  Wait 10 minutes and continue styling as normal.  It has a lovely light scent and this will be great on the ends of my hair.  I’ve been pretty pleased with Lador hair products, as I have purchased a few from Memebox for scalp treatments and am glad to have this as well.

So. I have been using this for a few weeks now ~  The scent is different from the shampoo/conditioner/fill in treatment ~ it is more of a fresh, light fruity scent, which is quite pleasant.  However, because I use other products, I am not seeing the full benefits of this protein spray ~ or my hair is already strong.   I think if you are a hair product minimalist, this product might be better for you with visible benefits.  For me, this is just a conditioning treatment and I have many of these already.  I did do a pH test as I was curious to see how a spray could balance your hair ~ I am sure they mean scalp…  This looks to be closer to a 6 than 5.5 with my testing.  That said, they never did state what the pH level was.

You can purchase this travel size 30 mL for $7.00 at Memebox

Extra Hair Care Products

These were items that I purchased WAY before I bought the Mini Kit and already, these two items have found a place in my hair care routine.   They were not included in the Mini Hair Kit

Lador Tea Tree Scalp Clinic Hair Pack   This is the souped up version of the scaler ampoule.  It looks to share a lot of the same ingredients, plus some extras, of which I will pluck out a few that are of interest to me.

  • Snail Secretion Filtrate ~ first time I’ve seen this ingredient in a hair product!!  Well it makes sense ~ snail slime contains natural acids and elastin to help promote heathly skin.  Not only that, but snail secretion filtrate helps skin issues, so why not the skin on your head?

The mucus that snails excrete is called Helix Aspersa Müller Glycoconjugates that is supposed to contain proteins, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, which help to retain moisture in skin and hair. According to cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller, “Chemically speaking, snail slime is a complex mixture of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, glycoprotein enzymes, hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, antimicrobial peptides and trace elements including copper, zinc, and iron.”  (source)

  • Ceramides are found naturally in your hair and they contain linoleic fatty acid and are a major factor in shiny, smooth hair ~ they keep the “scales” on your hair strand flat and in place.  If your hair is lacking in ceramides, it will feel dry and straw like.  Ceramides will help your hair retain moisture, while providing moisture, strengthen your hair, and promote hair elasticity.
  • Tea Tree is an anti fungal, antibacterial and antiseptic ingredient that will help promote a healthy scalp and will help in promoting hair growth.  It will remove debris, such as dead skin cells, and excess oil and unblock your hair follicles dead cells, unblocks hair follicles and prevents an itchy scalp.  It is a great ingredient to use on your head!

I am not sure why the description on the product itself states that it contains propolis, because the ingredient list does not show that.  I even translated the back of the product itself, in case the translation was incorrect at Memebox ~ which has happened in the past ~ but no…Weird.  Maybe they confused the snail slime with propolis.   I have no idea.   This works the same way as the ampoule ~ shampoo your hair and then massage in this product into your wet scalp (only your scalp!!) and then leave in for 3 minutes.  Rinse out completely and then you can use a conditioner.    This product is thick and creamy, with a light minty scent and leaves my scalp tingling and refreshed.  My hair is very bouncy and full after I use this.   I was worried about the rose extract, but I have not had any issues with this product ~ I guess the ingredient is so far down the list, it has been neutralized.

More on why you want a healthy scalp

You want to have a healthy scalp so that pores are unblocked, sebum production is maintained without imbalance and good blood flow to your hair root, so that your hair will grow fast and healthy. Removing any build up will prevent “plaque” that has formed on your scalp, which is a by-product of your natural hair oils, hair products including shampoos and conditioners, pollution, sweat and dirt. This will allow your scalp to “breath” and new hair growth will occur.

Lador Scalp Helper Hair Tonic   I fell in love with Innisfree Green Ginseng Scalp Tonic a year or so ago and alas, it has been discontinued.  I am down to my last lone bottle and a few months ago, I decided that I should be looking for a replacement.  I tried to get the ingredients list for the Innisfree item, even emailing InnisfreeWorld, but with no success.  There is no list on the bottle nor on any of the websites, so I can only go by what Innisfree’s description states:  “Contains green ginseng for clean and healthy scalp. Provides nutrition and moisture to the scalp with an energizing cooling sensation“.  It also smells like ginseng, very herbal, very hanbang.   I have tried another product ~ Aubrey Men’s Stock Ginseng Biotin Scalp Tonic, but that had ginseng way down on the massive ingredient list and it smelled like lavender.  That isn’t bad or anything, but it was not the same as the Innisfree product.  So, when I saw that Lador came out with this product, and it contain both ginseng and peppermint with ginseng being one of the top ingredients!

  • Ginseng Extract has been used in Asian skincare and hair care products for centuries and it is thought to help stop hair loss and to promote hair growth, by stimulating your scalp.  There is a study that has been done that shows that it can help with hair growth,  conducted by Korea University College (study
  • Peppermint Oil is a centuries old hair treatment remedy and it can help with dry scalp and reduce dandruff.  It can also promote hair growth, by increasing blood circulation, which stimulates the hair follicle.  Plus it is refreshing and cooling on your scalp as well!
  • Vitamin B3 is nicotinic acid amide or niacinamide. This helps with a healthy scalp which promotes hair growth and boosts circulation, which means increased collagen production.
  • Cnidium Extract is used to help treat itchy skin, rashes and eczema

I love using hair tonics as they help give my scalp an extra boost of nutrition, while keeping my scalp healthy, clear and also feeling really refreshed!  As I get older, I want to make sure my hair doesn’t get too thin, as it is already fine.  Hair loss is something that women get to look forward to as they age or even just stress from daily life (and I have a LOT OF STRESS in my life!)   Hair tonics are products that you just target spray onto your scalp, not your hair ~ you can put spray it whether your hair is wet or dry.  I use them mainly in the warmer months, as that is when my scalp is the most oiliest and needs more help.

So, how did Lador perform?  I do like the scent ~ it isn’t as ginseng-y as Innisfree, but it is very herbal and it is just as cooling as Innisfree.  The formula is more intense, hence the long targeted nozzle piece.  I made the mistake of putting too much of this product in my hair, as I removed the long nozzle, and my hair was very thick and almost greasy.  It is a very nourishing treatment, so a little goes a long way and only target your scalp.    So far, I do like the Lador product over the Aubrey version, but I will miss my Innisfree once that is gone.  I know I can spend a LOT of money on Amazon and purchase it, but I should wean myself off it now, as it is discontinued.  I do recommend the Lador Hair Tonic if you are in need of such a product.    You can purchase a 120 mL for $10.00 (another steal) at Memebox
