Unboxing February 2016 MaskGenie!

Because of the short February month, I just received my February MaskGenie just a few days ago.  Still pretty quick, as these went out on 2/17 and it is shipped from Hong Kong.

MaskGenie is a monthly subscription of masks ~ facial sheet mask, body masks, wash off masks and hair masks.  The owner lives in Hong Kong and she (Genie) tries out the masks and determines which ones she feels are worthy for her customers to try.   Shipping is extremely fast ~ within a week, I get my pouch.  You can order the 8-10 mask pouch for $23.99 and that includes shipping and she just doesn’t ship to the USA ~ MaskGenie ships all over the world.  The 5 pouch mask set is being discontinued starting January 2016, as there wasn’t a lot of subscribers to that and the 10 pouch is now 8 to 10 masks, as Genie wants to be able to add in higher end (more expensive) masks to the pouch ~ the value will still be there, however, it is just that some masks will be more expensive.

Skin Formula Skin Check Surge Squalane Moisturizing Black Mask (Taiwan)   This is a double “care” mask ~ it not only contains the highly moisturizing squalane, but the mask sheet is made from bamboo charcoal, which means it will help remove impurities from your skin and help control oil.  Squalane is known to absorb quickly and rapidly into your skin, going deep into your dermal layers.  It is an antioxidant, which means it combats free radicals, prevents UV ray damage and hyper-pigmentation, helps with the production of cellular growth, as well as being an anti-bacterial.  Now, squalane can be derived from olives, but it can still be extracted from shark livers.  This mask doesn’t state specifically what type of squalane is used, but the picture of the shark might lead me to believe it is from sharks, so if you are against using animal products, you might want to steer clear of this mask.   RV $2.60

Description: Squalane is a skin friendly ingredient with strong penetration ability to skin.  Combining with hyaluronic acid, the mask helps effectively  balance oil and water on skin to help soothe excessive dry and uneven skin tone.  Your skin will reveal natural gloss with deep moisturizing from inside out. MUL Snail Hyper Moisture Paper Mask (Korea)  I am most excited about this mask!! Snail slime helps reduce redness, moisturizes, repairs skin damage, promotes cellular regeneration and firms skin.  Now, I am a bit confused by the wording on this mask.  It states it is a paper mask, but then it references to  “glossy silk technology” on the front of the package and  “Korean breathable silk”  in other online descriptions.  It also states in the description that there is almond oil, aloe vera and vitamin E, but those ingredients are not mentioned in the ingredient list.   So, your guess is as good as mine and this is a mystery mask!!   RV $1.20

Description: Gel essence mask sheet formulated with Snail Secretion Filtrate ingredient to regenerate and protect skin cells damaged by stress and environment. Snail slime is rich in collagen, vitamins, glycolic acid, then added  almond oil, aloe vera and vitamin E, it effectively prevents oxidation and prompts the cell regeneration.   Tightens skin pores, reduces skin redness, provides deep moisturizing, helps skin regain its health and elasticity, provide energy to fatigued skin.

My Scheming Goat Milk Moisturizing & Brightening Mask (Taiwan) I love My Scheming masks ~ one of the first masks I fell in love with was a My Scheming Mask (review here).   This is a goat milk moisturizing and brightening mask and I am really curious how this will perform in regards to brightening.   I will be doing a series of brightening masks after I finish up with my oily/blemish prone series on IG, so this mask will go in that pile to review.  Side note ~ this has WOOL in it??   RV $2.00

  • Goat’s milk is ultra moisturizing, naturally homogenized and is pH balanced naturally ~ it is close to your skin own pH level. It contains “good fats” ~ capric, caprylic and capronic acids, and the naturally occurring triglycerides. It not only helps to moisturize your skin, but keep your skin’s oils in balance, so they will not overproduce sebum ~ which results in clogged pores and blemishes.   Goat’s milk is full of restorative vitamins, minerals and proteins and usually people who have allergies to cows milk can use goat milk products.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate) is an intensive moisturizing ingredient which bonds water to keep skin hydrated.   It is a natural substance found in the human body and it made up of amino and uronic acids, and helps retain 100 to 1,000 times its own water weight in our skin cells.
  • Salix Alba (willow) Bark Extract is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) which helps exfoliate skin by removing dead skin cells, contains salicylic acid, to help combat acne.  It is also high in anti-oxidants, which tone and reduce inflammation as well as being an astringent, to control oil.   Salicylic acid is fat soluble, so it can really get to the oil that is inside your pores.
  • Licorice Root (Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate) is a brightening ingredient as well as reducing flaking and smoothing your skin. It is also an anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory.

Description: Goat Milk is enriched with high amounts of proteins, milk fats and a variety of vitamins.  Its mild texture can be easily absorbed by skin, prevent skin dryness while providing skin sufficient nutrition. Its outstanding hydrating effect keeps supplying skin with hydration, repairs skin wrinkles, smooths skin while brightening.  Leaves your skin fair, supple and silky smooth

Annie’s Way Aloe Moisturizing Mask (Taiwan)  I am a huge fan of Annie’s Way masks (see my past reviews here) and I have used the Aloe mask before.  I have to say, they are one of the hardest masks to take photos off, due to the sheen of the packaging  and so it looks like I used a soft focus filter.   I will repeat my review on this mask here:

All of the Annie’s Way masks I tried  in this review are ultra thin masks, soaked in essence.   They have a “pearl paper” (plastic sheet) to help place the mask on your face without ripping the thin mask, and then you remove the pearl paper.   These masks remind me of Lovemore masks, another brand I adore, but it so hard to find online ~ they are always sold out.  The fit is very good around my face, not a lot of open areas or bunching up and it does fit like a second skin.  In fact, once it is smoothed into place, you can barely see the mask.   When the sheet is removed, you can see the different open weaves in the mask sheet.  Annie’s Way mask sheet material is imported from Japan and it is made from silk

This one smelled weird to me as I am used to Aloe Vera mask smelling like a combination of Aloe and Cucumbers, as they usually include cucs in aloe products.  They do have cucumbers in here, but it smells like a strange floral-y scent, which was the chamomile.  It wasn’t bad, but it was unexpected.  This was a very moisturizing mask with a cooling effect on my face.  My skin was moist but not sticky, and initially I didn’t think it was that moisturizing ~ so I brought out my handy-dandy digital skin analyzer (review here) and did a test ~ 20.8% oil/46.4% water ~ so it actually was hydrating!  I am glad I have this analyzer as it proves, or disproves, in this case, what my initial reaction was.   RV $1.40

You can purchase the moisturizing/soothing collection (which I reviewed here) at beauteque.com ~ and if you use MICHELE10, you can save 10% off your purchase (good for any item, multiple use)

Description: Aloe is a recognized beauty skin enhancing ingredient. It revitalizes overdry skin, leaving your skin with a visibly healthy, youthful glow

I am pretty happy with the selection in this month’s bag, especially with the enigmatic MUL snail mask.  However, the value this month is really low, much lower than normal.  I hope this was just a fluke this month and it goes back up, as the price on this pouch has gone up with lesser masks.  Now, if next month, the value makes up for this month, I am more understanding of this low value.  I don’t expect the exact amount I paid for this bag, but it should come close ~ this month was under by  at least $8.00 and that is with the retail value found online.  I paid $23.99  for this pouch, which included shipping, and received a retail value of around $15.65.

If you are interested in MaskGenie,  just go to her online store at www.skinilove.com  and you can place your order that way, which would be month by month OR if you think you want this to be a reoccurring subscription, email Genie at her FB page at and let her know to invoice you monthly.

Do you get this month’s pouch from MaskGenie?  What are you looking forward to trying out?
