Unboxing September 2015 BirchBox

This month, I was not overly excited about the PYS choices or the curated box, but I didn’t want to leave it up to chance ~ BB might send me the Pop Beauty eyeshadow!   I went with Davines shampoo as I figured that was the lesser of the evils plus I would get an extra bonus of the conditioner.    Let’s see what I got this month

This month’s theme is  Better Together:   Five years ago, we started Birchbox because we believed in a better way to discover the best in beauty. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for joining us on this amazing journey!

Wow, has it only been 5 years?  I’ve been a member since July 2012 and it does seem a lot longer to me!

My Box Revealed!

Okay, I know they took inspiration from Pinterest “mood” boards, but that box design  and colors are a throwback to the 1980’s and not in a good way!  I feel like I should put on some legwarmers, ripped sweatshirt and headband and aerobicise to this song that sums up that whole crappy trend for me

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo  This is my PYS choice and although it is marketed for controlling frizzies (which I do not have), I do find that this type of shampoo is very good in the winter.  The cold just sucks the moisture out of the air and my hair gets static cling ~ you know what I’m talking about!  Using a richer shampoo once a week that is formulated for frizzies helps control that.     This is made with olive extract from Messina, Italy ~ ohhh, fancy!  This smells very clean and fresh, and is a nice size for a sample.   I still have never received Davines Sea Salt Spray from Birchbox 😦  I would love them to send that to me in a future box!  Travel Size 75 mL RV 7.50

Description: As a last-minute defense against frizz, we’ve been known to sport a topknot and be done with it, but sometimes we just want to let our hair down. That leaves our strands smooth for a style that’s more manageable, which helps get us dressed up and out the door faster.  Minuta Olive from Sicily – Rich in fatty acids and vitamins, it has an elasticising and softening action Phenethyl Benzoate – strong shining effect;

Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner This WAS supposed to be a bonus with my PYS choice.  Notice something missing?  Yep, BB didn’t send it to me!  WHAAAA ~ I mean, I know it was just a foil, but it is nice to have the shampoo AND conditioner together.  Oh well.  I will still post the product description & ingredients.  Maybe Birchbox will send me a sample of it when I email them about this missing item.

Description: Nip frizzy hair in the bud (and simplify your morning routine) by using a specialized smoothing conditioner in the shower. This creamy concoction from Davines calms frizz and loosens tangles, making your whole hairstyling process a lot simpler. It’s formulated with olive extract (from Minuta olives grown on a family farm in Messina, Italy), which infuses strands with fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants for a softer, smoother style. Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive I’ve tried the Green Apple Peel that was the non-sensitive version and I am glad that I received the sensitive one, because if I remember correctly, the regular was a bit too strong for my not sensitive skin!  This organic peel contains apples and lemons, which are a natural source of alpha hydroxy acids, to exfoliate and brighten your skin tone, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains salicylic, glycolic and lactic acids to help unclog pores and remove dirt while aloe vera and glycerin will soothe and condition your skin.  I am pretty excited to try this out!   Do not use this product if you have rosacea or extremely sensitive skin.  Sample Size 7.8 mL   RV $5.07

All that changed when Juice Beauty released this version of their powerful Green Apple™ Peel. Suitable for even the most delicate skin types, it delivers visible smoothing results after just one use. This patented, award-winning formula peel is made with a gentle yet effective dose of organic, fruit-derived hydroxy acids and raw sugar cane, which exfoliates to reduce breakouts and even out skin tone. We love how the mild tingle lets us know this peel i’s really working.  Formulated without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. Our products are never tested on animals.

English Laundry Eau de Parfum Signature for Her It sounded nice until I read jasmine and rose.  I am allergic to both of those scents. Oh well  Sample Size 1.5 mL (??) RV $1.35

Description: We have a sneaking suspicion that Jane Austen’’s saucy literary heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, might turn to this classic British scent to melt Mr. Darcy’’s cold, brooding heart. This scent, inspired by classic country gardens, reveals itself in layers. First, opening notes of quince mingles with whiffs of white chocolate and jasmine. Next up, hearty scents of rose and orris root give the scent a floral yet woodsy finish.

Ingredients: Alcohol Denat, Fragrance (Parfum), Water (Aqua), BHT, Benzophenone-2, FD&C Yellow #5, FD&C Blue #1, D&C Red #3 Signature for Her Body Lotion: Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Glyceryl Stearate, Fragrance, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Triethanolamine, Glycerine, Methylparaben, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, D-Limonene, Benzyl Salicylate, Propylparaben, Gamma Methyl Ionone, Isobutylparaben, Hexyl Cinnamic Aldehyde, Linalool, Lyral (Hydrxy-Methylpenty-Lcyclohexencarboxaldehyde), Coumarin, Lilial (2-(4-Tert Butylbenzyl)-Propionaldehyde), Benzyl Benzoate, Citral

Pop Beauty POP Portfolio Eyeshadow in Sugar Plum  These colors look beautiful.  I have blue-green eyes and when I wear plums and purples, my eyes really look green.  There are three shades ~ silvery taupe shade, plum shade and a deeper taupe-purple shade.  I didn’t swatch them or open this up as I am very familiar with POP Beauty eye shadows ~ they look fantastic, but they have no pigmentation and require a lot of work if you want a deeper color (which I do!).  Pop Beauty shadows are like Coastal Scents, they look really nice, but they have no pigmentation and I really wish Birchbox would stop carrying these two brands (or giving them out).  I purposely picked the Davines shampoo to avoid getting this product.   I wish I had gotten the Japonesque Eye Shadow Duo instead that was offered this month as well.  😦  Trio Sampler RV $2.17

Ingredients: Mica, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Polybutene, Caprylyl Glycol, Isopentyldiol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol. [+/- Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090), Chromium Hydroxide Green (CI 77289), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Red 40 Lake (CI 16035), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Ultramarines (CI 77007), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140)]

This month’s box was a lower valued box, clocking in at $19.32 in RV ~ I am sure it is also because I am missing a very expensive and small foil in my Davines conditioner.  I am sad that I got Pop Beauty ~ I hate that brand ~ and not some other cool product.  I state on my profile that I am adventurous and yet, Birchbox keeps sending BORING makeup brands.   That said, I did only pay $10.00 for it, and I did have a “7 item” box (despite the missing item), so I was able to review for 70 points plus 10 points for sharing on twitter.  Do your reviews, ladies!  That is money at the Birchbox shop and you don’t have to “write” a review, just give feedback on the sample.  The review that shows up on the page is different from BB points reviews.   I mean, look what I got for 42 cents.

There was one more nice surprise in this month’s box and that is a 20% off coupon to be used this month at Birchbox’s shop.  Off I go to buy some stuff!!

Do you subscribe to Birchbox?  What did you get this month and what was your favorite item?  What are you going to purchase at the Birchbox shop with your 20% off code?
