Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion Review

I totally love and adore Klairs Supple Preparation Toner (review here) and I was really excited when Klairs came out with a LOTION to go along with their toner. This lotion is a bit different from other lotions, as it is a multi-purpose face + body lotion!  This should be really interesting to see how it performs.  I have reviewed several Klairs products by now, and I have really enjoyed all of them ~ you can read my reviews here.

Skin Type/Concerns:  Oily, blemish prone, aging skin with hyper-pigmentation and fine lines/wrinkles.

Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion ~ I am just going to call it Klairs Supple Lotion from now on ~ is a lighter weight skincare moisturizer than Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream, according to their press release. I have never really used Rich Moist Soothing Cream on a long term basis as it is a thicker cream and it looks to be more for drier skin types than my own ~ but I did get some foil samples and will do a mini comparison later on in this blog post. Klairs Supple Lotion is a  moisturizing lotion and it helps supply moisture, while maintaining hydration all day long.

Ingredients of Note

Where I looked at the ingredients list, I saw so many similarities to the Rich Moist Soothing Serum but also saw several new ingredients, ones that are more deeply moisturizing.

This does have a couple of humetants, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate ~ which will not only attract moisture to your skin, but retain it ~ but only if the air is not dry ~ if you just use a hydrating product without something to keep it in, regardless of the weather, your skin will actually become drier as it cannot grab moisture and the air will suck out any moisture you do have in your skin.

So, what this lotions has to prevent the loss of moisture are occlusives ~ which will actually SEAL in the moisture, so it cannot escape ~ microcrystalline wax, shea butter and jojoba are moisturizing ~ jojoba oil is  similar to your skin’s own sebum, so it is thought that jojoba “tricks” your skin into thinking you have enough oil and therefore, your skin won’t produce additional oil.

Ceramides play an important role in your skins barrier function as they help repair and protect your moisture barrier. They will  keep your skin hydrated and plump as they retain water.  Ceramides are lipids (fats)  and are found naturally in your body and you lose the ability to produce as you age, so adding them to skin care products helps with anti-aging

Beta glucan is in here and it helps stimulate the production of collagen, speeds up wound healing, soothes and calms skin due to its anti-irritant and strong anti-inflammatory properties, moisturizes, locks in natural moisture, anti-aging and anti-wrinkle due to its anti-oxidant properties and also helps repair your moisture barrier. Natto gum ~ fermented soy beans ~ helps attract moisture and is an antioxidant.  It traps in moisture and may also be a potent antioxidant.  Natto gum contains lecithin, a soothing emollient that helps soften your skin, keeping it hydrated. It also contains PGA, gamma polyglutamic acid,  helping to moisturize and exfoliate old skin cells. It can penetrate to the deepest layers in your skin, locks in moisture and helps increase the production of NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor).

Polyquaternium-51 (Lipidure) is a 4th generation moisturizer and has a higher moisture retention than even beta glucan, according to Klairs.  This lotion also contains some contains anti-oxidant amino acids that have water binding properties and also aid in collagen production ~ lysine HCL, proline, acetyl methionine and theanine.  Arginine is another natural amino acid and it promotes healing and detoxes your skin. It also helps guard against the formation of wrinkles and loss of skin firmness.  Betaine is also found in here and it is superior for its intense moisturization and hydration properties, without the stickiness, and also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while attracting moisture (humectancy) and relieving skin irritation.

Centella asiatica is a common herbal ingredient that is used medicinally to help speed up wound healing, such as blemishes and skin rashes. It also helps minimize the appearance of pores, and since it stimulates collagen production, it will make your skin more supple and firm.  Aloe Vera is a powerful moisturizer that doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily or greasy.  This also contains vitamins C  (sodium ascorbyl phosphate) and E (tocopheryl acetate), which are powerful antioxidants to help brighten and moisturize your skin, while providing anti-aging properties. This also has a lot of anti-oxidant, soothing and healing botanicals and it does contain cetyl alcohol, which is a good alcohol, as it is a fatty alcohol.

This is a vegan product and is cruelty free.  It is also free from alcohol denat, fragrance, pigments and parabens.  Klairs claims that this is mild and gentle enough even to use on infants!

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Sorbitan Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Beta-Glucan, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Microcrystalline Wax, Cyclopentasiloxane, Betaine, Ceramide NP, Polyquaternium-51, PEG-100 Stearate, Illicium Verum(Anise) Fruit Extract, Citrus Paradisi(Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Chlorphenesin, Carbomer, Arginine, Citric Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Apium Graveolens (Celery) Extract, Brassica Oleracea Capitata (Cabbage) Leaf Extract, Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract, Brassica Rapa (Turnip) Leaf Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Natto Gum, Centella Asiatica Extract, Disodium EDTA, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine  cosDNA analysis

This lotion comes in a whooping huge 250 mL tube  ~ the tube is quite easy to squeeze and it has a convenient flip top cap.  I will say this ~ if you use this on your face only, you only need a little bit. This lotion isn’t the lightest I have tried but it isn’t thick either.  It glides on easily and absorbs quite quickly, without a sticky or heavy residue initially.  If you use too much and your skin cannot absorb it completely, it will leave a greasy film behind ~ I am mentioning this because if you do overdo it initially, don’t get discouraged ~ you just have to find the right amount of product for your skin. The lotion is a creamy white in color and doesn’t have a scent to it that I can detect. I know that the third photo is pretty much useless, as it just shows my skin with the product fully absorbed, but sometimes products can leave a really noticeable finish or has issues, like pilling.  That is why I try to show the last photo as proof, even though many times you won’t see anything weird!!

This increased both my moisture and oil levels in my skin by 14%. This lotion makes my skin feel so soft, supple and very smooth.

That said… this lotion is better suited for my day time routine during the cold winter months or as a night moisturizer year round ~ I started using this when the weather was cooler and I didn’t have any issues with it. However, this is not an oil controlling lotion and when the weather got warmer, my face actually got more oilier as the day progress when I used this on my face as a daytime lotion. When I used it as a night moisturizer, I didn’t really notice any more oil than normal on my skin and this lotion did not contribute to any abnormal rash of new blemishes. I think it actually helped soothe and heal my skin, as it is chock-full of those important skin restorative ingredients.

Now, this is a a great all over lotion ~ I use it on my legs, arms, hands and feet ~ and it keeps my skin smooth and moisturized. I think this is a lotion that would be handy for those who travel a lot as it is a multi-purpose lotion and also if you are looking to downsize or simplify your skincare routine ~ but only if you have normal to dry skin or live in an area where it is cool year-round. For my oily skin, it is not really suitable as a day lotion during the hot months… or maybe it is? Keep reading….

Mulit-Tasker, I am

Wishtrend made a video of lazy  beauty hacks with this cream ~ of course, they had the sleeping pack, hands and feet in there there, but there were 3 others that I did try out. The first one was as a lip smoothing mask pack ~ just apply a layer of lotion to a cotton pad or sheet and then place over your lips for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove cotton and wipe away any residue.  Then apply a small amount of the lotion on your lips. My lips did feel immediately softer, smoother and very moisturized. This is a quick way to get your cracked and dry lips back into shape!

The second hack I tried was one that I really enjoyed and in fact, I think this lotion works well this way during the summer months without additional oily or greasiness. First apply some lotion on your skin. Wait a few minutes and then remove that layer with a wet cotton sheet, sponge or soft towel. The lotion should have absorbed into your skin and by removing that top layer with a water soaked cotton/sponge/towel, just turns what is left on the surface into a watery like product. Now, it wasn’t clear in the video, but I did the next step on a wet face ~ I did not dry my face ~ I dabbed on just a little bit of the lotion on my face and using the water already on my skin, massaged this lotion-water mixture into my skin. It actually absorbed faster and when I applied the lotion in this manner, it did not make my skin oilier or greasier as the day progressed during the warmer days. I am not sure of why one would do this hack in the first place ~ perhaps it is because all you have is the lotion, no toner or serums ~ and you want to replicate the toner/serum step by applying the lotion, watering it down when you rinse it off and then re-applying the lotion again. Waste of time? You decide!! I actually liked this hack and think it is a fantastic alternative for those days where you don’t have a lot of time in the morning.

The final one is actually a facial massage. Wishtrend called this an exfoliating step, but don’t get excited about that term. I did a pH test on this cream and while it is mildly acidic at 6.2 (and I do mean mild!), it isn’t a chemical exfoliator.

However, by using this as a massage cream, you are physically exfoliating your skin. I have used massage creams before and I didn’t care for them too much ~ I found them to be greasy and oily. Massaging your face actually has benefits beyond exfoliation, as it stimulates your blood flow and brings more oxygen to your face, meaning more collagen will be produced.  It also helps tone and tighten your skin as well, while allowing for best skincare product absorption.  I dabbed on some of this cream on my already clean face and in a circular motion, massaged the cream on my face, and really concentrated around my nose, forehead and cheeks, for about 3 to 5 minutes.  My skin felt baby soft and smooth after that massage treatment without a heavy residue on my face ~ this lotion does have a nice light finish and it didn’t cause my skin to be sticky or tacky.  I kept touching my skin as I was pretty amazed at how soft it was!

There is a final beauty use for this lotion ~ if you have dry or damaged hair, you can use this as a hair lotion/leave in conditioner. Just apply a bit of lotion to your hair where it is damaged and your hair should be more smooth with less flyaways. I did try this out and I found that, once again, a little goes a long way. Now Wishtrend states apply to damp hair, but I apply it to dry hair ~ I guess it whatever works for you ~ try it both ways. It does provide a nice gloss to the ends of my hair and reduces the frizzies.

Klairs VS Klairs

I did a quick comparison between the Klairs Supple Lotion and Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream I had several foil packets, which contained a lot of product.  I did try the Rich Moist Soothing Cream on my face and I will say that I do prefer the Supple Lotion.  Wishtrend even wrote up a quick description compare between the two products.

The Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream balances the hydration of the skin by soothing/moisturizing the sensitive skin, helping to restore skin continuously. It has a thicker consistency than lotion to protect sensitive skin and to soothe, acting as a great daily facial cream.

The  Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion is a moisturizing lotion that has a slightly lighter feeling than a soothing cream, and helps to restore and continuously maintain the hydration without the stickiness or the heaviness for those who want immediate moisture.

The ingredients list for the Rich Moist Soothing Cream is very similar to Supple Lotion  ~ the order is a bit different and RMSC has a lot of essential oils at the end of its list, which Supple Lotion does not.

Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream Ingredients: Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Stearic Acid, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Beta-Glucan, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Microcrystalline Wax, Betaine, PEG-100 Stearate, Ceramide 3, Polyquaternium-51, Sorbitan Stearate, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carbomer, Arginine, Illicium Verum(Anise) Fruit Extract, Citrus Paradisi(Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Nelumbium Speciosum Flower Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Chlorphenesin, Disodium Adenosine Triphosphate, Algin, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Citric Acid, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Natto Gum, Centella Asiatica Extract, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Disodium EDTA, Apium Graveolens (Celery) Extract, Brassica Oleracea Capitata (Cabbage) Leaf Extract, Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract, Brassica Rapa (Turnip) Leaf Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit/Leaf/Stem Extract, Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil  cosDNA analysis

This is a bright white cream that has a very faint scent of citrus and it does seem a bit “stiffer” in its texture than the lotion, but it still glides on easily.  It does take a little longer to absorb fully on my face and it increases my moisture and oil levels a bit more than the lotion ~ by 18% .

When I used this on my face, I could feel almost a slight film as this seems to be more occlusive than the lotion.  Just like the lotion, this is not an oil controlling product and my face got oily soon, but I didn’t break out due to my usage of this cream.  My skin did feel soft and silky smooth and was plumped up with moisture and it had soothing benefits as well. I just had the foils, but the full size product also comes in a tube, just like the lotion, but it is much smaller and around the same price point ~ 60 mL at $24.50 whereas the lotion is 250 mL at $26.50 USD

You can see the different in texture and spreadability between the two products here.  The lotion is more “liquidy” than the cream and you can see that the cream forms stiff peaks before I blend it out, whereas the lotion does not.  For me, I think that the lotion is better suited to my skin type than the cream, although the cream would be fantastic as a night pack in the winter time!

Final Thoughts

Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion is one of those sleeper products, imho.  You don’t know how versatile it is until you try it in different ways.  This is the perfect moisturizer to take with you when you have to travel and cannot carry a lot of products ~ it won’t break due to its soft plastic tube and you can use it on your face, body and even as a hair treatment!  The one downside for me is that I cannot use this during the warmer months as a facial product during the day time as is, but if I dilute it with water, it becomes more lighter and doesn’t cause my skin to get as oily, so for those of us with oily skin or just want a lighter product, this is a nice beauty hack.  I love it as a body lotion as it really makes my skin feel so soft and supple.  If you are looking to try a product that is a multi-tasker as you might be on a budget, don’t like a lot of steps, just on the go all the time or you couldn’t use the Rich Moist Soothing Cream, I recommend this lotion!  Even if it doesn’t work out on your face, you have a nice body lotion ~ that said, if all you are looking for is a body lotion, you might want to find a less expensive alternative unless you have skin issues that could benefit from this product.   This has a lot of good healing ingredients, so if you have rashes or dry itchy skin, this would be well worth the money just as a body lotion.

Have you tried this lotion yet?  What did you think of it?

  1. I am amazed at how detailed and informational your review is. It is not just a “oh it works for me/it doesn’t” “works for oily, dry, sensitive skin etc.” like you dont just rephrase what the product claims. You actually expanded on the ingredients which is a total YES YES YES for me! Thank you so much for doing the hard research and having hacks, recommendations, positives/negatives all in ONE post! Thank you!

  2. Helpful review! I’d like to ask what daytime moisturizer you’d recommend then for someone with oily skin like me who also lives in a tropical country. I’m currently already using Hyaluronic acid from The Ordinary, but other than that, I just put on sunscreen. Thanks so much!

    1. I am currently enjoying the new Hanyul mentha trouble gel cream as it keeps my skin hydrated without a dewy finish. Another great choice is LeeGeeHam’s Hope 5A Control Emulsion – that does control oil and I did do a review here https://wp.me/p3OLOa-4g0 I normally use gel creams, emulsions or thin lotions as moisturizers
