I confess ~ I hate wearing sunscreen. I grew up in an era where people actually put baby oil on their skin and roasted in the sun, where the beautiful Bain de Soleil lady was the color to be and my mom even had a sun lamp. I actually shunned sun bathing at an early age, as I could not sit or lie that still for an extended period of time. But I would play in the water, do outdoor activities and that is when I needed sunscreen ~ and I rarely used it. Why? Because most sunscreen would clog up my pores, make my skin more greasy and I would break out in acne.
Time moves on and I have sun damage from those years. It could be worse, but it bothers me just the same. I’ve been using sunscreen on my arms and legs, back of my neck and décolletage with no issues, but my face has always been one that I had to be very careful about using sunscreen. I have found a good one in Peripera Ice Jelly Sun, but I was running out and I had some points to use at Birchbox. I saw this K-Beauty Sunscreen by IPKN and I love apple scented products, so I purchased this with my points.
This contains a patented formula called “Ice Apple Water” which is a highly concentration of apple water with natural herbal extracts ~fennel, sweet bay, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, thyme, basil, marjoram and sage . This formula will soothe and calm skin for a smooth texture. This is also a pale green tint which is a correcting base and is a mineral oil free sun cream, which will help control the oil in your T-zone, reduce the appearance of your pores. It is light weight yet has an SPF 40+ to provide adequate protection against harmful UV rays. IPKN actually makes a higher SPF in this cream~ 50 ~ but for whatever reason, in the USA market, the SPF 40 is being promoted. Don’t ask me why Americans don’t rate a higher SPF, but there it is. However, 40 will work just fine for me.

As you can tell by the photo above, I need to apply more sunscreen on my hands and arms!! Of course, I took these photos after I came back from my long drive ~ over 1600 miles round trip ~ so my left arm was hanging outside of the car quite a bit and did catch more rays than the rest of me. I was using a different sunscreen for my body, as I will put the more greasy, white cast and clog poring ones on my arms and legs and leave the oil free ones for my face.
Anyway, IPKN Pore Care Apple Sun Cream is a very pale mint green in shade, which disappears quickly once massaged into the skin. It smells delightfully of fresh apples, a very light scent that fades away. This is supposed to be a color corrector, but I didn’t really notice any correction to my face. This doesn’t leave a white cast and although I can feel it has moisturized my skin, it really doesn’t leave my skin shiny or dewy looking. Once it is absorbed into my skin, my skin feels very smooth, not sticky and soft. I apply this sun cream right before my foundation as obviously, this wouldn’t go over it. I didn’t need a lot of this, as a little does go a long way with this medium weight sun cream.
Does it minimize the appearance of my pores? I didn’t really notice a difference ~ however, what makes this a winner for me is that it didn’t clog my pores and I didn’t break out when I used it. Did it help with my oil production on my face? No, but it didn’t contribute to it either, so that is still a positive for me and this product has no major acne triggers, but a lot of emollients and moisturizing products. Oily skinned types do need moisturizing, as when our skin gets dehydrated, we actually overproduce oil in our skin.
Since I am already obsessing over my sun damage hyper-pigmentation spots and use products to try and help lighten them, I have to use a sunscreen on my face daily. Otherwise, those spots will darken even further, as skin lightening products also cause your skin to be very light sensitive. A catch-22, if you will. This is another fine option for oily skin, acne prone skin type who are looking for sunscreen protection. You can purchase this product at Birchbox for $28.00 for a 2.47 oz tube
