Unboxing Macy’s January 2016 Spotlight!

Macy’s recently announced that they were going to do a monthly subscription box, called Spotlight and you could sign up for a waitlist.  The waitlist is now closed, so I am not sure when they will offer this subscription to everyone, but it is supposed to be 5 to 7 beauty and fragrance items, with one full sized item in each box for $9.99.   I was fortunate enough to receive December’s box and now,  Macy’s sent their January box to me for review purposes

Michael Kors Rose Radiant Gold    I was worried about the “rose” in this fragrance name, but I guess the rose is for rose-gold, which there are 3 radiant gold fragrances from Michael Kors ~ 24 Brilliant Gold, White Luminous Gold and Rose Radiant Gold.  This is a woodsy floral ~ according to Michael Kors, the top note is spice, middle is floral and bottom note is musk.  This is a very nice scent with a fresh, green gardenia floral with cassis .  If there is rose in here, I cannot smell it and I think this is a nice scent for spring time.  Sample 1.5 mL  RV $3.97

Description: Tantalizing and hypnotic, Rose Radiant Gold entices the senses with a spotlight on sparkling spice, textured with a charming femininity of rich florals and soft-to-touch musks. To Michael Kors, nothing is more alluring than the rich indulgences of gold. The ultimate symbol of luxury and glamour. The Gold Collection is comprised of three individual fragrances destined to shine.  Notes: Cassis, Tiare, Vanilla.   Style: Radiant. Beautiful. Alluring.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray   This is getting really good reviews for its effectiveness in helping keep your makeup stay on longer.   I don’t really use setting sprays in the winter time, but for warmer weather, I sometimes reach for it, as my face gets really oily and makeup just slides off.  This would also be handy when going out, as no one wants to bother with makeup touch-ups all night long.  After applying your makeup, hold this 8 to 10 inches away from your face and mist your face 2 to 4 times in a X and T fashion. .  Sample Size .5 oz RV $7.00

Description: Is makeup meltdown ruining your midnight mojo? Mist on this weightless spray to give your makeup serious staying power. Developed in an exclusive partnership with SKINDINÄVIA, this groundbreaking, clinically tested formula is suitable for all skin types and features patented Temperature Control Technology. It actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep foundation, eyeshadow, blush, and concealer in place—even in hot and humid or cold and windy conditions. The result? Smoother-looking skin and vibrant makeup that lasts all day (or night) without melting, cracking, fading, or settling into fine lines.

Origins Checks & Balances Frothy Face Wash  I am a huge fan of Origins and I am looking forward to trying this facial cleanser.  This cleanser is supposed to balance both oily and dry parts of your skin.  This has a nice herbal scent to it and I am sure the pH level is a bit high.    This is made with natural, certified organic ingredients and 100% natural essential oils, so if you do not care for essential oils in your facial products, you should avoid this.  It does not contain  mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, or  animal ingredients   Sample Size 1 oz  RV $7.07

Description: When it comes to faces that are both dry and oily, it takes a clever cleanser to balance the two. This gentle, frothy face wash carefully does both jobs without canceling each other out. Skin feels comfortably refreshed after cleansing—never tight, pulled, or parched. Great for all skin types, it’s enriched with aromatic bergamot, spearmint, and lavender to add pleasure to the process.  Broad leaf kelp extract discourages excess oil production while wheat protein balances and protects dry-prone zones. Tourmaline makes water wetter to more easily disperse dirt and sebum down the drain. Mint: Rejuvenates and purifies pores; sweeps away impurities.

Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation Primer  I have used Smashbox PhotoFinish before and whereas it does create a matte finish, while blurring fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing my skin ~  it caused me to break out.   However, this does get great reviews so it was nice to include this sample in this month’s box.  This is an oil free, lightweight primer, made with Vitamin A and E, grape seed and green tea extracts.  I just read that I could use this in my hair to tame frizzies and flyaways, so I might use this for that purpose.   Sample Size  .25 oz  RV $9.00

Description:  An iconic primer that preps skin to create a perfect canvas for flawless foundation application.  The silky blend of vitamins and antioxidants smooths and perfects skin, while the unique formula supports natural collagen and fills in fine lines and pores for a flawless finish.  Use after moisturizer and before foundation for complexion perfection. This skin-soothing blend of antioxidants, which can be worn alone or under foundation, works overtime to fill in fine lines and even out skin texture.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone, Trisiloxane, Silica, Dimethicone/ Vinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Extract, Propylene Glycol, Water (Aqua, Eau), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cola Acuminata Seed Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract  cosDNA.com analysis

CLINIQUE Almost Lipstick in Black Honey This is my number one absolute favorite lip tinted lip balm in the world!  I’ve been using this for eons and so have a lot of other women!  This looks very dark in the tube, but it is a sheer, but buildable tint.  The shade works for almost everyone and it will differ based on your own skin tone.    Clinique sometimes comes out with different variations of the “honey” balm, but Black Honey has been around since 1971 and really hit its popularity in the 1990’s, when plummy-brown shades became really popular.   This hybrid between a balm and lipstick is very moisturizing and protects your lips while giving it a beautiful warm raisin color.  Deluxe Sample RV $9.00

Ingredients: castor seed oil, cetyl ricinoleate, glyceryl triacetyl ricinoleate, candelila wax, carnauba wax, polyethylene, tocopheryl acetate [yellow 5 lake (CI 19140), red 33 lake (CI 17200), red 28 lake (CI 45410), red 6 lake (CI 15850), blue 1 (CI 42090), iron oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), red 7 lake (CI 15850), mica, bismuth oxychloride (CI 77163), red 30 lake (CI 73360), carmine (CI 75470), manganese violet (CI 77742), red 22 lake (CI 45380), titanium dioxide (CI 77891), red 21 lake (CI 45380), yellow 6 lake (CI 15850), red 27 lake (CI 45410), orange 5 (CI 45370), red 36 (CI 12085)]   cosDNA.com analysis

Benefit They’re Real! Push Up Liner   This is a confusing sample and it is not Macy’s fault.  This has horrible packaging and the product has this soft rubber tube and liner.  I followed the instructions and gently squeezed the bottom of the tube upwards and what I got was a huge clump and then it came out sporadically.  This meant that I could not draw a nice line on my eyes, let alone on my hand for testing purposes!  The shade is a nice matte shade, but this product just reminds me of a cheap grease pencil and I don’t like it.   I am not a huge fan of Benefit products and they didn’t let me down with this item.   Sample Size .003 oz RV $3.60

Ingredients: Isododecane, Dextrin Palmitate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Silica. [+/-: CI 19140 (Yellow 5, Yellow 5 Lake), CI 42090 (Blue 1 Lake), CI 77007 (Ultramarines), CI 77163 (Bismuth Oxychloride), CI 77288 (Chromium Oxide Greens), CI 77289 (Chromium Hydroxide Green), CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides), CI 77510 (Ferric Ferrocyanide, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide), CI 77742 (Manganese Violet), CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide)].

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Peony  This lip gloss is a Macy’s exclusive and Peony is a pink mauve shade.   It is not very flattering and it looks nothing like the swatch on Macy’s website, which is more muted.   Last month, Macy’s Spotlight box had this same product, only in Undressed, another unsuitable color for me.  The formula is fantastic, however, it is similar to Mac’s LipGlass and it does have fantastic shine and pigmentation.  I did purchase Vintage after trying Undressed last month and I love it, but this shade is a dud.   Full Size RV $16.00

Also included is a magenta sparkly bag 🙂

What do I think of January’s Macy’s In the Spotlight box?  I feel the same way I did about December’s box ~ it seems that they are repeating the same brands ~ Clinique, Urban Decay,  Anastasia Beverly Hills, Benefit ~ and even the Anastasia Beverly Hills product is the same thing, except in a different shade.   I am at loss why this is happening, as Macy’s has a huge selection of skincare and makeup brands ~ click here to see their list of vendors.    I am very disappointed again with the full sized item, Anastasia Beverly Hills lip gloss, as it is such a neon shade.    I am happy with Origins and it is good to see another brand ~ Smashbox ~ but overall, Macy’s needs to shake it up a bit with their selections.   I do think Macy’s needs to take a look at their current vendors and come up with a better selection.  This month’s Spotlight was worth a retail value of over $55.00, which is over 5  times the $9.99 subscription rate.   I am very thankful that Macy’s sent me this box for review, as I was extremely interested.

What do you think of January’s Spotlight box?   Are you interested in getting Spotlight?

  1. I was so excited when this box was announced. And then I was confused when the wait list closed. Now like you I am wondering about the brand repetition. But if I ever get a chance I think I will give it a try for $9.99. At that price I can give it a long enough run to see how it balances out over time. When I can only afford a couple of months it’s tough to make a call sometimes.

    Great review as always!

  2. I think I’m liking Macy’s subscription better than Sephora’s solely based on value and # of items. But(!) those strange ABH glosses though, what strange shades. Maybe mixing Peony with other glosses would look good?
