Unboxing June 2015 MaskGenie!

I will give my standard intro to MaskGenie, as it is a small ~ but fantastic ~ subscription  service and you may not know about it.

MaskGenie is a monthly subscription of masks ~ facial sheet mask, body masks, wash off masks and hair masks.  The owner lives in Hong Kong and she (Genie) tries out the masks and determines which ones she feels are worthy for her customers to try.   Shipping is extremely fast ~ within a week, I get my pouch.  You can order the 10 mask pouch for $22.00 or the 5 mask pouch for $12.00 and that includes shipping and she just doesn’t ship to the USA ~ MaskGenie ships all over the world.

One of the things I really appreciate from Genie is that she does an unboxing video once she sends out the pouches.   It is really great that she cares about her customers to provide this extra service and she explains a bit about the mask, why she choose it, where it is from and so on.   Her June Pouch Unboxing Youtube can be found here.

Su:m37˚ White Award Bubble-De Mask   (Korea) I have not tried a Su:m37˚ product before, as the cult favorite is one with rose in it.  This is a bubble mask like no other, from what I have read so far!   This has fermented NAPS, N-Acetyl-Phytosphingosine. NAPS  will help inhibit and reduce melanin in your skin, so it will have a brightening effect.  It also helps repair, rejuvenate and soothes your skin, as well as stimulates collagen production.  It also reduces blemishes as well, while deep cleaning your pores.   Acai berry extracts contain powerful antioxidants and a rich source of Vitamin C and portulaca oleracea extracts will calm and smooth your skin.  I am pretty excited to try this, as I love a great bubble cleanser.  The full size 100mL is over $50.00, so I appreciate having a nice sample to try this product.  I believe this is also known as White Award Detox Mask, as I am seeing this product with those names used interchangeably.  The ingredient list provided is from the White Award Detox Mask, so if this is not the same product, please let me know in the comments below – thank you!  Sample Size 4.5 mL  Value $2.40

Description:  3-in-1 effects: Brightening, Deep pore cleansing, Skin smoothing. This wash-off type mask releases oxygen bubbles into the skin to draw out the wastes and pollutants located within the deep pores, thereby detoxifying and brightening up your skin.

How To Use: After washing face, pump and release an appropriate amount and spread evenly to the thickness of 2mm over the face except for skin around eyes. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Timeless Truth Caviar and Collagen Elastic Mask (Taiwan)      According to the package, they have created a specialized weaving technology that allows the mask to fit perfectly on your face without any “dead zone” (their words, not mine ~ I am now thinking of Stephan King’s Dead Zone novel….)   This is a caviar and collagen mask that will help aging skin to be firm and smooth.  Genie sounded really excited about this mask in her youtube, so I will have to try this out soon. Value $2.50

Description:   This caviar mask is able to help achieve natural cell regeneration to repair damaged skin, smooths wrinkles and improve skin condition. Collagen acts as the combo component to actively penetrating the internal skin layer to promo skin regeneration, increase moisturizing level and achieve better skin tone. The key ingredients of this mask are

  • Caviar Extract: Caviar extract was found to speed up the natural production of collagen up to 67% and significantly reduces the protein cross linking (fibronectin). Caviar extract firms your skin and provides the highest possible level of hydration. Caviar extract is very rich in vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B6 and micro-elements Co, Cu, P, Si, Zn as well as amino acids such as glycine, lysine, histidine, arginine and asparagine. Those ingredients intensify the processes inside the skin cells and at the same time slow down the aging process by moisturizing the skin.  Collagen is naturally occurring structural proteins normally produced in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. These proteins are believed to be crucial for keeping skin smooth, supple, and elastic. Though the body naturally produces these proteins, their production usually decreases as people age. Certain skin-care products and foods can help maintain elevated production of collagen and elastin within the skin. Healthy levels are thought to reduce signs of aging, particularly wrinkling and sagging of the skin. The skin-care benefits of collagen and elastin are believed to be many. These proteins are said to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and add, restore, or maintain skin’s elasticity. Products containing them are typically used to reduce the signs of aging.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A naturally occurring substance in the human body that regulates cell renewal, lubricates connective tissue and maintains skin’s moisture and elasticity. When used topically, hyaluronic acid creates a moisture barrier on the skin, helping to make it smoother and softer. This ingredient is able to hold up to 1000x its own weight in water, thus producing amazing benefits for dehydrated skin. As an injectable, hyaluronic acid works as a plumper, filling wrinkles and fine lines. Because it is already naturally present in our bodies, hyaluronic acid is a safer alternative to synthetic ingredients and is less likely to be rejected as a foreign substance. The molecule, however, is quite large and can’t fully penetrate the outer layers of the skin to fill wrinkles when used topically.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid:  Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant found in every cell in the body as well as in some foods. It’s sometimes referred to as the “universal antioxidant because it regenerates or recycles other antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and glutathione when they lose their ability to act as antioxidants. It also has the power to protect both cell membranes and the inside of cells against oxidative damage. Vitamin E is only effective at protecting cell membranes and other lipid-soluble structures from oxidative damage, and vitamin C only works well in a non-lipid environment. Alpha lipoic acid works well in both of these areas. With its powerful antioxidant properties, it’s not surprisingly that alpha lipoic acid has been the focus of research. Studies have looked at its ability to ward off certain diseases and slow down the aging process. Alpha lipoic acid also has skin benefits. Not only is it a potent antioxidant, it has the power to fight inflammation. Inflammation can damage skin cells and cells that produce collagen and elastin that keep skin looking youthful. Oxidative damage is also one mechanism by which sunlight ages skin, and alpha lipoic acid helps to prevent this type of damage.
  • Peptides:  Peptides are segments of active proteins that communicate with cells and instruct them to behave in certain ways. In the skin, peptides may signal elastin production (elastin helps skin “bounce back”) or prompt skin to heal itself after a wound. The peptides used in anti-aging products enter skin cells and instruct them to do certain things such as produce collagen, alleviate redness or signal muscles to relax, thereby minimizing wrinkles. One common peptide found in skincare products is ‘palmitoyl pentapeptide’ which has been shown effective in fighting wrinkles. There are other peptides that don’t directly stimulate your skin to do anything, but because they are so small can penetrate deep into the layers and act as a delivery mechanism for other ingredients. Copper peptides, for example, bring molecules of copper deep into the skin where it can improve wound healing from the inside out.
  • Ceramide: Lipid molecules that are found in high concentrations within cell membranes. In the top layer of the skin, ceramides hold skin cells together, forming a protective layer that plumps the skin and retains moisture. (Think of skin cells as the bricks and ceramides as the mortar.) In skincare products, ceramides are used to replenish the natural lipids that are lost from exposure to harsh environmental factors, use of drying products, and during in the aging process. They restore moisture, fortify the skin’s natural barrier and help protect it against harm from foreign elements. Ceramides are also particularly effective in treating eczema. (source)

MaskGenie’s Review (source)

I purchased this mainly for the cute packaging. The mask was soaked and dripping in essence, and it smelled of oranges. The mask felt thick and cheap, and I had to overlap the sides to make it fit better, but it had odd slits on the forehead and chin areas, probably so that it would give a more 3D fit, but left those parts uncovered. Sides of nose not covered again. It felt quite soothing with the mask on. After removing the mask after 20 minutes, there was still a little essence to massage into the face. It left a slight sticky feeling, but went away fairly quickly. I noticed my face became slightly firmer and pores ever so slightly smaller.

Holika Holika Pig Nose Clear Blackhead 3-step Mask  (Korea)  Genie’s review panned this mask and as someone who has tried it as well, I agree with her.  I am not a fan of this 3-step pore treatment myself, as I felt that this did not remove any gunk from my pores and it was a tedious process (did I mention that it is 3 steps?) that takes almost 45 minutes.  For your NOSE.  Nothing else.    Value $3.50

MaskGenie’s Review (source)

I’ve heard many good things about this blackhead set, so I gave it a try. Each step takes 10-15 minutes, so it’s actually very time-consuming, but I still made time for it. The 3-step kit contains 3 nose strips that 1) opens pores 2) removes blackheads 3) minimises pores. The first strip is like a cotton nose mask that has a texture of a cotton face sheet mask. Its size is slightly bigger than the CNP Lab one, and also smells like lemon. After removing the strip after 10 minutes, I washed my nose, and stuck on the second strip. The second strip fit well on my nose, really looking like a pig’s nose. It, however, is much smaller than the Biore ones, so if you have a big nose, it may not cover properly. After 15 minutes, the strip dried, and I tried to tear it off my nose – it was SO painful to tear off, and there was only ONE blackhead stuck on the strip. Even the Biore strips manage to stick a few blackheads off, but this one failed completely. FYI I used the CNP Lab blackhead set the next day, and I managed to get rid of a lot of the gunk from my nose! Putting that part aside, I stuck the third strip onto my nose, and out of surprise, it’s actually a hydrogel patch! The patch was very wet, and it felt cooling on my nose. Conclusion: I wasted 40 minutes on this blackhead set, went to sleep late, and it didn’t do its job at all! The only positive thing about it is the cute packaging. Would never repurchase.

Description:  This is a 3-steps kit perfect for pore control. The first step opens your pores which allow for removing blackheads easily. The second step removes blackheads. The third step to minimize pores

How To Use: After cleansing, place step-1 on nose for 15-20minutes. Remove it slowly and wipe off any blackhead or impurities from pores. Wet nose with water and place step-2 on nose. After 10-15 minutes and slowly remove it from the edge. After step 1 & 2, place step-3 on nose. Remove it after 10-15 minutes and gently tap it for better absorption.

Once again, I am really happy with my MaskGenie selections in the June pouch.  I am really happy that Genie put in a Leaders mask (due to customer requests) and I cannot wait to try the Donkey Aqua mask, as I have heard a lot of good things about it.  The Timeless Truth mask is a brand I never heard of before and Genie is giving this brand high reviews.   I also enjoy getting whitening masks, which I received several, Secret Key is a always a favorite and the sample size of Su:m37˚ bubble mask is really interesting to me and I cannot wait use that.   I paid $22.00 for this pouch, which included shipping, and received a retail value of around $21.00.   I never mind getting a lower value with this service, as the masks are either hard to find here in the States or the shipping makes them more expensive.  This gives me a way to try masks out and if I love them, then I can look for deals to make them more affordable.

If you are interested in MaskGenie,  she now has an actual store front!  Just go to at www.skinilove.com  and you can place your order that way, which would be month by month OR if you think you want this to be a reoccurring subscription, email Genie at her FB page at and let her know to invoice you monthly.

Do you get this month’s pouch from MaskGenie?  What are you looking forward to trying out?

  1. Hi.
How long does it usually take for you to receive your Mask Genie pouch?
Im going to start ordering from Genie, but would like an idea as to how long (on average) it takes for her shipments to reach the US.
    In my case, Florida.

    1. It usually takes about 7 to 10 business days from when she sends it out. It doesn’t take that long ~ I’ve waited longer for my Birchbox to arrive!! You will be very happy with her service

      1. Thank you!
I just ordered her August pouch.
        Im super excited!
I love sheet masks… I have sooooo many right now… I went wild on Amazon and bought so many of the ones that offered variety packs. Lol.

And Im getting into Korean skincare products, and discovered Memebox (last month) as well.. and lets just say… Ive gone overboard already.
I bought the Milk box, and the Fountain of Youth box, and a misc box… and Im waiting for my Surprise box and Missha box….
And Im trying so hard not to order the CosRx box ( I missed it the 1st time) and the Renew & Detox box.

I have to be careful and had to set a $200 limit (per month *cough*) limit for myself.

        I. Am. Addicted!!!!

I need rehab and your blog is torturing my soul! Lol

        1. I hear ya on the sheet masks – I have over 200!! I keep giving them to my family & friends – haha. It is difficult to restrain purchasing k-beauty – but I have to say, my skin has never been this clear and “normal”. I’ve tried a lot of skin care prior to “discovering” k-beauty products and I am hooked!
