Petunia SkinCare 1.0mm Derma Roller, Revitalize Eye Serum & Hyaluronic Acid Serum Review

I have been Derma Rolling for about 2 months now and earlier this month, Petunia Skincare asked if I would like to review their Derma Roller, as well as a couple of their facial products, Professional Hyaluronic Acid Serum and Revitalize Eye Serum.  After researching their products, I accepted.  I received these 3 products free from Tomoson for my honest and unbiased review.  Be warned, this is a long review!

I am a noobie when it comes to Derma Rolling ~ a very nice FB friend of mine actually introduced me to it and then gave me lots of helpful advice and suggestions, which I will share with you.   Katiebug has a youtube channel and if you are interested in seeing her do a live Derma Roll, you should check it out!

About Petunia Derma Roller 1.0 mm 540 needles

The derma roller is the best and convenient alternative to popular cosmetic surgical procedures. The dermaroller has proven to stimulate collagen production, accelerate skin regeneration, build up pitted acne scars, reduce wrinkles, fade stretch marks, and cellulite! By derma rolling, you are essentially stimulating collagen in an area where there may not be any collagen productivity. This is great for acne scar removal.

Petunia Skincare 540 Derma Roller is made with the highest quality surgical stainless steel available. Our stainless steel needles are medical grade, the same kind that doctors, surgeons, tattooists, and acupuncturists use! Don’t waste money on cheap quality derma rollers made with titanium on the market. Stainless steel offers the least reactions to the skin. Think about it, would a surgeon ever use a titanium scalpel blade, or would a tattooist use a titanium needle? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Our micro needle roller is the best compliment for all your skincare products such as serums, creams, and gels. Microneedling allows ingredients to be absorbed faster because pores are opened from the epidermis to the dermis layer. This tool is great to use with our Hyaluronic Acid Serum, and Vitamin C Serum. It is also compatible to use with cellulite and stretch mark creams, scar gels and hair regrowth treatments. Our microneedle roller can be used alone or with products.

The skin naturally regenerates itself approx. every 28 days. With derma rolling you can encourage skin regeneration, meaning you are building new skin. This is great with lightening acne scars, dark spots and age spots as it can speed up the pace in which new skin is made to help blend to its surrounding skin. This tool will help build up dimply cellulite and stretch marks on the skin through collagen and elasticity production. Hair regrowth relies on genes that promote the growth of hair cells. The most important chemical needed in the body to promote new hair cells is human growth factor. Scientists suggest derma rolling can stimulate human growth factor. As the needles create holes along the hair line, it inflicts minor injury. Now the body must work to produce new skin the area that injured and release human growth factor and other chemicals that aid in the regrowth of thinning hair.

Petunia’s Derma Roller has a lot more needles than other derma rollers out there on the market ~ 540 1.0 mm needles made from the highest quality of surgical stainless steel ~ all set in a disk.   The packaging shown here is different from the website, as I have the newer version and they haven’t updated their product images yet.   I like that it has 540 needles ~ most are around 200 ~ that means I get more needling in my skin, which means serum access to my skin.  I also like that it is made from surgical stainless steel, instead of titanium as titanium dulls quickly.  It is scary to think about Derma Rolling, but the principle is this ~ skin needling involves rolling over your skin several times with a roller than has very fine needles.  It creates channels in your skin which will stimulate the skin into creating new collagen.  Those channels are also now available for the optimal penetrations of your serums and allow them to reach the lower levels of your skin layer, which would contain Vitamin C, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin E, just to name a few.  Don’t worry, those channels close up fairly quickly (within a few hours) and are not seen by the naked eye.   You are actually creating natural collagen for your skin, which is different from collagen injections.  The following list, from Petunia Skincare, contains the benefits from Derma Rolling

  • Firmer and thicker skin
  • Help smooth facial scars
  • Stimulate collagen and elastin production
  • Help with scar removal and stretch marks
  • Stimulate hair growth
  • Diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Save money from surgical and laser treatments
  • Can be used on any part of the skin
  • Creates multi micro-channels in the skin, allowing products more able to penetrate the skin at a deeper level than just surface application

Your skin remains intact, unlike chemical peels and laser-resurfacing, and your epidermis is not removed from Derma Rolling.  Derma Rolling actually triggers your skin to think it needs to heal and regenerate, which will create new collagen production and cellular turnover.

derma roller benefits

The Derma Roller I received from Petunia Skincare is 1.0 mm, which is a good, all-purpose facial Derma Roller.  I also have a .5 mm for finer lines around my eyes.

To Derma Roll, after you have prepared your skin, you will apply your Derma Roller with a slight pressure and roll vertically, horizontally and then diagonally, making 10 passes over each area.  If you watch Katiebug’s youtube tutorial, you can see how she is making those passes over her face.

Once I am done with my Derma Rolling, I then take a vitamin C facial mist and apply that on my face and gently wipe off any residue of my numbing solution (more on that later).   I then apply my Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C serum and then a good Vitamin C moisturizer.   Do not apply any makeup afterwards.  My face is reddened due to the fact I just poked holes in it, but that goes away after a few hours.   You will also feel like you just used a medieval torture device on your face, and you probably would not be far off the mark!   Beauty comes with a price ~ haha.   I usually Derma Roll in the evening and by the morning, my skin color is back to normal.   Avoid wearing foundations for 12 to 24 hours after derma rolling, do not engage in sunbathing or sunbeds one week after Derma Rolling and wear your SPF!

I only derma roll my face every 3rd week and have started to derma roll certain body parts as well, such as a spider vein on my leg and some stretch marks.   Derma rolling is not an instant gratification ~ it will take a few months to see any drastic improvements.   Your body is regenerating your skin cells and you cannot hurry Mother Nature!

Getting Started with Derma Rolling

You cannot just have a derma roller and start.  I recommend the following products to have on hand, many which were recommended to me by Katiebug

  • 91% Isopropyl Alcohol to sterilize your derma roller and work area
  • A good numbing gel – I use Hush Anesthetic Numbing Gel but am looking into other ones, as this one takes a while before my face numbs
  • Cotton pads
  • Your serums:  Vitamin C, Retinol, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, whatever you wish to target.  You can use a combination of them.
  • Vitamin C Moisturizer
  • Vitamin C Facial Mist (optional)
  • If you are prone to any type of infections, a good anti-bacterial cream as well
  • Thin latex-type gloves (optional)

Make sure your workspace is clean and wiped down with a solution of the 91% alcohol and water ~ I have a spray bottle just for this use.  I also place down clean paper towels where I might be placing my derma roller.  Vitamin C is so important because it helps with the collagen production, so if you don’t have it on hand or you like your other serums, you can add a powered form of it and add it to your serums and moisturizers. Before using your Derma Roller, inspect it for any dull or bent needles.  If it looks like it has those, time to get a new Derma Roller.  Your Derma Roller should last about 8 months to a year if handled and stored properly.

Sterilize your Derma Roller before hand by soaking it in the 91% Isopropyl Alcohol for about 5 minutes.  Rinse well under hot water.   If you are sensitive to pain, apply your numbing product and wait until your face begins to turn numb ~ your product should tell you how long it takes.   At this point, if you choose to wear the thin, latex-type glove, you would put them on.  I personally don’t use gloves, but others may wish to.  It doesn’t have to be latex, just a thin glove (not some dish-washing rubber glove!)

You are set to Derma Roll, vertically, horizontally and diagonally make your 10 passes over your face or other body parts, applying slight pressure.  You should not be drawing blood!  After you finish Derma Rolling, you will need to clean your Derma Roller again before putting it away in its plastic container.  Petunia Skincare recommends the following

  1. Pour rubbing alcohol into roller container and submerge roller. Let both, roller and container, disinfect in the alcohol for 5 minutes.
  2. Pour out rubbing alcohol and run container and roller under hot water.
  3. Fill sink with hot water, add a tablespoon of bleach, then place roller and container in. Leave for 5 minutes.
  4. Take roller and container out, rinse with cold water, and then dry it off. Place roller back in container.

I have never done Step 3, but if you are susceptible to infections, it does sound like a good step to use.

Please note:  I am not a doctor or a professional skincare expect.  Before Derma Rolling, you should ask your dermatologist or doctor if this is safe for you to do.   Derma Rolling is not recommended for those with

  • active infections
  • chronic skin disorders
  • blood clotting problems
  • poor healing or skin malignancies
  • active acne (I have acne, but I do not Derma Roll over my pimples.  That will just cause the spread of acne towards other parts of your face.  You can Derma Roll, but avoid any areas that have active acne)
  • eczema
  • rosacea
  • psoriasis
  • severe solar keratosis
  • raised moles or warts

Purchase information will be at the end of this blog post.

Petunia Hyaluronic Acid Serum

About Petunia Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Petunia Skincare’s Professional Hyaluronic Acid Serum, made with the highest quality vegan-free and cruelly-free hyaluronic acid, is the ultimate anti aging and anti wrinkle solution to give you that dewy, elastic, and youthful boost in your skin. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture and water into your skin to help you achieve plump, soft, and tight skin. Fine lines, crows feet and wrinkles are filled in.

As we age, the hyaluronic acid content in our body naturally decreases, and as a result we must build more hyaluronic acid back into the body either through orally or topically. Our serum has been tested thoroughly and has been proven to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen.

Hyaluronic acid is the key ingredient in this serum, and we have combined two very important antioxidants: Vitamin C, and Ferulic Acid into our formulation. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for retaining moisture giving you skin’s youthful elasticity and plumpness by trapping water in your skin. Vitamin C helps prevent aging of the skin by speeding cell regeneration, repairing free radical damage, and stimulating collagen. Ferulic acid protects the skin by neutralizing free radicals from UVA/UVB rays which would otherwise cause premature aging in the skin.

We use only vegan, and cruelty-free formulations containing natural/organic active ingredients. No parabens, no sulfates, no gluten, no alcohol, no phthalates, and absolutely no animal testing. Our serum is made in the USA in our advanced FDA registered facility.

Petunia’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a light weight gel that is in a dark brown bottle, for optimal protection.  It uses the traditional eye dropper applicator, so you can control how much you wish to use.   It has a slight bitter-sweet, herbaceous scent, which is due to the neroil oil.  This is the first time I have had a Hyaluronic Acid Serum made from neroil, so I am interested in its results.  Some people might be hypersensitive to neroil, so I suggest doing a patch test first on your skin.  I did not experience any negative irritation from using this.

Neroli oil is a plant oil produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium subsp. amara or Bigaradia). Its scent is sweet, honeyed and somewhat metallic, whereas bergamot, being rich in linalool (which is the main component in lavender), has more of an aromatic, soft floral. (source)

The list of ingredients is short and sweet, which is wonderful!  This is 98% natural, oil free, paraben free and alcohol free, and it does not contain sodium benzoate, which is a conversational preservative ingredient when it is mixed with Vitamin C.   Petunia uses MAP Vitamin C, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, in all of their products that contain Vitamin C.   MAP is proven to be more stable and potent that L Ascorbic Acid and has a longer shelf life without using any harsher preservatives.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?  No, it is not something that destroys your skin.  In fact, hyaluronic acid is part of your own body’s natural composition ~ but as we age, we lose our ability to produce this, which causes our skin to dry and roughen.  Hyaluronic acid allows our skin to retain moisture and “plump” up our skin cells, which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.  About Petunia Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which is a vegan hyaluronic acid:  “The hyaluronic acid (HA) serum is a hydrating serum in which it forms an air permeable layer and penetrates into the dermis, thus boosting the elasticity and hydration of the skin as it acts as a “water-reservoir” for skin cells by binding water within the intercellular structure of the skin. The protective layer on the skin locks in moisture, which gives skin the youthful appearance. Our hyaluronic acid also aids in the production of collagen.” (source)

Other good ingredients

  • Neroli Water~ an antiseptic ingredient that also balances oil production , cleans dirt, bacteria and unclogs pores, increases cellular activity to help repair broken blood vessels, fades scars caused by acne
  • Ferulic Acid ~  This is a plant-based antioxidant and also provides sun-protection benefits
  • Sorbic Acid ~ a preservative which has a very low rate of negative reaction among those who have eczema

I like how this feels on my skin ~ it is quickly absorbed and leaves my skin feeling silky to the touch.  As with any serum, you must moisturize.  A serum’s purpose is to penetrate deeply into your skin layers and you will still need a moisturizer to hydrate the outer layer and to lock in all of the nourishing ingredient.  I am really excited about Petunia’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum and it will be one that I purchase, due to its few, very potent ingredients.

Ingredients: Water, Neroli (Citrus Aurantium) Distillate, Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Ferulic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid analysis

How To Use: If using toner, apply before serum. Apply on clean and damp face. Follow with regular skincare regimen and lastly, apply moisturizer to secure optimum moisture in the skin.

I happen to like using organic and natural serums and moisturizers on my face after I Derma Roll.   I continue to use my other wonderful K-Beauty skin care products 24 hours later.  However,  the immediate after-skincare regime with Derma Rolling, I like using products that have organic, natural and few ingredients as possible in their composition.   These products are going to penetrate more deeply into my skin layer than other products, thanks to the needling, and I want to ensure I know what these ingredient are and the effects they could have on my skin.    It is one thing to get a rash on your outer layer of your skin, but deep into your dermal layer ~ well, for me, that is a personal preference and in no way am I condemning other fine products out there.

Petunia Revitalize Eye Serum comes in a small airless pump container to prevent the serum from oxidation.   The color reminds me of olive oil ~ however, there is no olive oil in this product, but other great ingredients, which I will describe later on.   There is no noticeable scent and it goes on smoothly, very silky, which must be due to the grape seed oil.  The texture is almost like a facial primer ~ where ever this is applied, it has a silky feel to it.  This serum is fast absorbing, non-sticky and non-greasy and I can already see that my skin under my eyes is firmer and lighter, even if temporarily.   This is a serum, so you only need to use a little bit and it will absorb quickly into your derma layer, so you should ALWAYS use a hydrating eye cream, to both lock in the serum nutrients and to create a moisture barrier.

Once again, Petunia Skincare impresses me with their few, but potent skin care ingredients.  I really like that they are focusing on “less is more” and choosing ingredients that give you the most beneficial impact of anti-aging, skin cell turnover, firming, brightening and hydrating properties.  This serum does not contain oil, alcohol or parabens.

Some of the ingredients below were confusing or unfamiliar to me, so I am grateful that Petunia’s website explained what these all were, so I could properly add in the ingredients in cosDNA’s website to analyze this product.   I also added additional information in the list below.  You can tell that this product has a lot of antioxidants and moisturizing ingredients.

  • Sea Kelp Bioferment:  Macrocystis pyrifera (sea kelp) is a sea macro-algae which contains minerals and algin.  This product is then fermented to make these properties more readily absorbed by your skin, a highly moisturizing, firming and nutritious ingredient.
  • Sodium PCA:  natural humectant that is derived from plants, fruits and coconut oil and has the ability to attract and absorb moisture from the air
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate: the most powerful and stable Vitamin C derivative (MAP)
  • Alpha Bisabolol:  a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial made from the essential oil of the German Chamomile plant; reduces flaking and restores suppleness to skin.  Help deliver active ingredients into the dermal layer.

  • Pomegranate Extract: an antioxidant, inhibits the growth of harmful enzymes that can cause cells to grow out of control and mutate
  • Carnosine: natural dipeptide of two amino acids(alanine and histidine); an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent
  • Carnitine: amino acid produced naturally in the body; has a fat burning property and is thought to reverse inflammation, swelling and the appearance of puffiness
  • Tetrahydrocurcuminoids: extracted from the root of Tumeric; a whitening, antioxidant ingredient
  • Natto Gum: derived from fermented soybeans; a potent antioxidant
  • Ferulic Acid: antioxidant and UV-blocking capabilities
  • Lycopene: antioxidant and UV-blocking capabilities
  • Glutathione: a natural tripeptide, or antioxidant, of three amino acids
  • Glutaredoxin: antioxidant protection
  • Superoxide dismutase: green plants extract (barley grass, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, wheatgrass, and most green plants); an antioxidant which overpowers superoxide, the most common free radical and protects the cells from it.
