I decided to purchase some facial and wash off mask packs that I found at Whole Foods that focus on eco-friendly and organic ingredients. I am a fan of organic/eco-friendly products (they were my first love, after all) and I am glad to see that there are facial sheet masks from Western brands that fulfill this need. All of these reviews first appeared at my IG account
Earth Kiss Million Year Clay Facial Revitalise Bamboo Sheet Mask Earth Kiss is the all natural, eco-friendly organic side of Montagne Jeunesse, which is well known for its wash off mask packs with tons of flavors! I am going to do a few eco-friendly masks ~ wash off, sheet masks ~ for those who are looking for an alternative and want to use products like this. This also marries my first love of natural, eco-friendly ingredients using Korean innovation. This mask is made in the UK, is cruelty free and vegatarian (not vegan, I guess). The sheet mask is made from bamboo and is infused with “Million Year Old” Rhassoul Clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and juniper oil ~ both to help detox, purify and revitalize your skin.
This also contains Himalayan Shilajit ~ what the heck is that? Well, accord to Earth Kiss this is an ancient Ayurvedic wonder ~ Shilajit is the thick, sticky substances that oozes from the cracks in the Himalayan rocks and cliffs during the summertime. It is made from organic plant material that has been compressed by rocks for hundreds of years. The 85 plant micronutrients found in Shilajit, like Fulvic, a natural antioxidant, Hippuric a natural antiseptic and Salicylic, a natural anti inflammatory, help rebalance the skin while also increasing energy and relieving stress and anxiety.

This mask is a thicker one, due to the clay and there is clay here! You can tell that I applied some of the clay that was in the package to areas on my face that the mask didn’t cover ~ I was sad that a clay mask didn’t cover my nose fully! The scent is amazing ~ it is very herbaceous and has that lavender/pine scent. Just lovely and soothing. Outside of the nose fit, the mask fit nicely ~ but they should have taken some of the forehead area and used it for the nose area ~ wow, that mask makes me look like I have a pointed head!! haha After 20 minutes, I removed and then washed off ~ this is a wash off mask, because the clay residue will be on your face ~ the mask didn’t tighten or dry uncomfortably on my face, so next time I use this, I will leave it on a bit longer. I wanted to use a detox mask this morning because last night’s collagen mask left me with some little whiteheads (yeah, collagen!!) I used an exfoliator first and then put this mask on ~ this mask helped get rid of the whiteheads, reduce the redness and it also tightened up the appearance of my pores.

Two thumbs up for this mask from Earth Kiss! I purchased mine at Whole Foods, but you can get it online at Earth Kiss store ~ they have a variety pack of traditional wash off mask packs and their sheet masks ~ I only have the 2 sheet masks. I will have to see if Whole Foods carries the wash off ones now!

Earth Kiss Miracle Clay Facial Hydrate Bamboo Sheet Mask This is my 2nd Earth Kiss facial clay sheet mask that I purchased at Whole Foods. The 1st one was a rejuvenating mask with juniper & lavender and this is a hydrating mask, with mandarin, lemon and citronellol oils and using Argile clay and Baobab to help detox and hydrate. The sheet mask is made from 100% natural bamboo. This contains Shilajit powder which is thick, sticky substances that oozes from the cracks in the Himalayan rocks and cliffs during the summertime. It is made from organic plant material which contains minerals and 85 micro nutrients that nourish and cleanse your skin. Other interesting ingredients: terminalia bellerica ~ astringent properties, terminalia chebula ~ purifying, rejuvenating and anti-aging properties, emblica officinalis ~ has antioxidant properties to help protect against photo-aging (UV damage). This mask smells like lemongrass and it is really just another fantastic aromatherapy experience from Earth Kiss. The fit is fairly good, it still needs more coverage around the nose area and I will tell you why ~ when I removed this mask 20 minutes later, my pores were so small and tight it was unbelievable! Having more of that mask coverage to get to the side of my nose and right under my nose area, where I have pore issues, would be great! There is clay residue, but I just rinse it off with cool water and my face feels so smooth, not dry and I love how this mask makes my pores look (like I don’t have any!!)
I am going to make this a regular addition to my Whole Foods shopping cart ~ these are great for traveling and vacation, as they are very easy to pack away (not a lot of space needed) or when you are sick ~ I know my face becomes very oily and prone to breakouts when I am ill but I normally do not have the will to put on a clay mask ~ tossing this on my face will make life easier, as I would just need a damp sponge or cloth to remove the clay residue. These are fabulous masks ~ if you find them in your area, I totally recommend picking one up and trying it! You can also order them online from earthkiss’s website

Andalou Naturals Instant Brightening Face Mask Pumpkin & Honey is a brightening exfoliating mask that contains fruit stem cells, pumpkin and Manuka honey. This is a one time use pod, but they do have the exact same product in a full size 50 gram jar, only it is called Andalou Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask. It is the same product, however and the glycolic acid will help gently exfoliate dead skin cells, while the Manuka honey will act as an antibacterial ingredient. Pumpkin is full of vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, nutrients and enzymes and will also exfoliate your skin to help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and will soften skin. This orange-y product, that smells more like pumpkin pie spice than pumpkin pie, has just enough to cover my face and there is an initial tingling as the glycolic acid and pumpkin enzymes start to work to dissolve dead skin cells and oil. I left this on for 20 minutes and rinsed off with warm water I did notice that my skin felt smoother, my pores cleaner and my face looked more bright, less reddened and healthy. This pod is vegan, cruetly free, paraben free, sulfate free & non-GMO. I purchased mine at Whole Foods

Andalou Naturals Instant Clarity Face Mask with Argan Oil & Blue Clay This is another pod that I purchased at Whole Foods by Andalou Naturals. This type, this is a detox and purifying mask, made with french blue clay (and the product is a beautiful light ice blue shade) and moisturizing argan oil, as not to strip your face dry. This has a minty scent to it, due to the peppermint and it is also very cooling and refreshing on my skin. This spreads and applies smoothly and I left this on for an hour ~ as it really doesn’t dry down quickly ~ it is that moisturizing. Once it was dry (and it turned clear at that point), I rinsed it off, leaving behind clear and cool skin, smooth. This helped control excess oil and my pores were smaller in appearance. The cooling, minty feeling is perfect on a hot humid morning! Another 2 thumbs up for Andalou Naturals!

Andalou Instant Luminous Face Mask with Turmeric & Gold Clay I went with their luminous mask the other day ~ which is made with french clay to help detox and turmeric and vitamin C, which will helps to brighten and even out your skin tone. I discovered that the clay description isn’t because of an ingredient, but the color of the clay – gold clay because the clay is a light yellow shade ~ it reminds me of buttercream ~ there is no gold in this mask. This pod has a great citrus scent, due to the orange & tangerine oils in it and it is very pleasant. This mask actually does tighten a bit on my face, unlike the instant clarity version. I seem to leave these clay masks for a lot longer than 10 minutes ~ I like to leave them on until they are dry to a transparent color on my face. Rinsing off with warm water, my face feels smooth and refreshed. I didn’t notice any brightening effects, but it does help with pores and leaving my skin feeling refreshed.

Andalou Instant Age Defying Face Mask 8 Berry Fruit Enzyme By my expression on my face, yep, I didn’t like this wash off mask by Andalou. I knew that my run of loving their wash off mask packs had to come to an end and this is the last wash off mask pack I have purchased from them (I do have a sugar scrub, but that is different). This mask makes me look like I have a heat rash with its reddish color (or I am SATAN!!! ~ I was thinking of putting horns on my head, but my photo crop made it difficult). It smells like fermented grapes, like a wine cooler, which is okay by me! I left this on for 20 minutes and it harded slightly so it looked like I had been dipped in red plastic or something ~ haha. It wasn’t uncomfortable or anything, just really cool looking. But the results were not very good for me. Perhaps this is made for those with dry skin and no pore issues, cause this didn’t clean out my pores at all. It was supposed to gently exfoliate my skin and remove excess dirt and oil, but I guess clogged pores are not on this mask’s menu of options. I didn’t really see any other benefits with this mask, which is supposed to “instantly refresh” my face while giving me a “revitalized complexion.” Nah, I don’t think so.
Description: 8 Berry Fruit Enzyme Face Mask Fruit Stem Cell Science® and Resveratrol Q10 instantly refresh as fruit juice enzymes gently dissolve dull, dry surface cells to reveal skin’s beauty and a revitalized complexion.
- Resveratrol Q10: Resveratrol combined with Coenzyme Q10; super antioxidant complex that helps to defy wrinkle formation, inhibit cellular damage, stimulate skin-firming collagen and elastin to decrease fine lines and smooth skin.
- Cranberry Juice: Improves circulation and hydrates to promote a healthy complexion, smoothes and softens skin.
- Apple Juice: Antioxidant properties help to slow aging and damage of the skin. Restores the skin’s pH balance and helps to keep the skin moisturized.
- Papain: Papaya enzymes gently clarify and exfoliate removing impurities.
Ingredients: Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry), Aloe Barbadensis and Pyrus Malus (Apple) Juices*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil*, Vegetable Glycerin, Pectin, Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus (Guar) Gum*, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) and Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extracts*, Fruit Stem Cells (Malus Domestica, Solar Vitis) and BioActive 8 Berry Complex*, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn), Rosa Canina (Rosehip) and Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Oils*, Manuka Honey, Papain, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Resveratrol, Ubiquinone (CoQ10), Lecithin, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea), Hibiscus Sabdariffa and Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Extracts*^, Phenethyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Oil* Non-GMO verified *Organic ^Fair Trade cosDNA analysis
Andalou Naturals Instant Pure Pore Clarifying Mask I received this mask in my Yogi Surprise Lifestyle Box and this is a brand that I have featured their wash-off mask packs that I have purchased from Whole Foods. This is my first facial sheet mask from them. Andalou is a USA brand so lets see how it stacks up. This mask contains willow bark extract, which is an astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, so it will help soothe and neutralize bacteria while tightening pores (by tightening pores, I mean temporarily) It also contains coconut water, which will intensely hydrate my skin with amino acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals which will help support healthy cell growth. This also has apple and grape stem cells that will energize my cells to repair and provide elasticity and firmness. The scent of this mask is very nice ~ sweet tangerines.
The essence is very thin and watery and lots of it!! The fit of the mask is good although it doesn’t adhere as well on the sides of my face as I would like it to ~ it is made from natural pure cellulose fibers from managed forests and is non-woven and eco-friendly as well as biodegradable. The fist thing I noticed once I applied the mask is how cooling it is!! I mean really cooling and refreshing. If I had known how cold this mask was (and no, it was not in the frig) I would have used it during the muggy heat wave that was called August! Anyway, the cooling sensation lasted for the whole time I had the mask on (30 minutes) and even after I removed it! I noticed that my skin felt very smooth and my pores looked very clean and a little bit tighter. But overall, my face looked clean, bright and almost mattified with this mask, once the essence had completely been absorbed by my skin. Two thumbs up and I will have to look around to see where I can purchase this mask ~ I don’t think I’ve seen it at Whole Foods, so it might have to be online

Earth Kiss saw my original IG on their masks and sent me their 4 wash off mud packs as I couldn’t find them at my local Whole Foods! So generous of them 🙂 The following masks were not provided for review, but for my own enjoyment but I would have reviewed them anyway if I had found them for purchase! They even sent me that cute Earth Kiss bag in the first photo as well 🙂
Earth Kiss Detox Mud Pore Cleanse Mud Mask I really love Earth Kiss clay facial sheet masks, so lets see how the their traditional mud masks hold up. This is a detox pore cleanse, made with glacial mud, kaolin, Moroccan clay, bentonite and dead sea mud ~ lots of clay and mud here! Plus it has shilajit powder, which is the thick vegetable matter that seeps up from the cracks of the Himalayan mountains. It has 85 plant micro-nutrients, including those whose benefits act as antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. This also has tea extracts, which are also antioxidants and mint oils, which act as astringents as well as smell great. I can really smell the spearmint in this mask and it is very cooling on my face. There is enough mud in this package for 2 uses, so I wish they would have a reclosable seal ~ as I have to put it in a plastic baggie to make sure it doesn’t dry out. I left this on for about 20 minutes ~ and even though it dried down to mud, it didn’t make my face feel tight or uncomfortable. Rinsed off with cool water and this really helped clean out my pores, tighten them (temporarily) and reduced the oily sheen. I have to say, this felt really good on too ~ the mint was so cooling and refreshing, plus the scent was amazing! You can actually order these from Earth Kiss website individually or in a sampler pack
Ingredients: Aqua (purified water), kaolin (natural clay), Moroccan clay (natural clay), butyrosperum parkii (shea) butter, Bentonite (natural clay), maris limus (sea silt/glacial mud), glycerin (plant origin), theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, silt (dead sea mud), mentha viridis (spearmint) leaf oil, glucose, maris sal (dead sea salt), xanthan gum (natural thickener), aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice, citric acid (plant origin), limonene*, asphaltum punjabianum (shilajit) powder, camellia sinensis (white tea) leaf, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, glucose oxidase (sugar origin), emblica officinalis fruit powder, terminalia bellerica fruit powder, terminalia chebula fruit powder, potassium iodide, sodium chloride, potassium thiocyanate, lactoperoxidase (milk origin) *Naturally found in essential oils cosDNA analysis
Earth Kiss White Thai Clay Rejuvenate Mud Mask This is the second of my 4 Earth Kiss mud masks that I am trying out ~ once again, each package is good for at least 2 uses. This one is made with White Thai clay, lotus blossoms and lemongrass oil, as well as shilajit, which is a natural antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, containing 85 plant micro nutrients. This is a bright white clay mask and I can smell the lemongrass in it ~ the scent is very soothing and relaxing. This does tighten up on my face and crack a bit, but it doesn’t flake off my face as it dries, and it has a cooling effect when it is on my face. When I rinsed off the mask with warm water, my face looked brighter all around, my pores were cleaner and tightened, and I could tell that the excess oil was removed as well. My face was not dry or tight, like some clay masks are known to do, but felt hydrated. Another great mask from Earth Kiss!
Ingredients: Purified Water, Kaolin (natural clay), clay (Thai clay), Bentonite (Natural Clay), Maris Sal (Dead sea salt), Glucose, Xanthan gum (natural thickener), Aloe Barbadensis (aloe vera) Leaf Juice, Glycerin(plant origin), Asphaltum Punjabianum (Shilajit) powder, Citymbopogon Schoenanthus (lemongrass) Oil, Citral*, Linalool*, Glucose Oxidase (sugar origin), Geraniol*, Camellia Sinensis (green tea) Leaf Extract, Cymbopogon Martini (palmorosa) Oil, Emblica Officinalis (Indian gooseberry) Fruit Powder, Terminalia Bellerica (baheda) Fruit Powder, Terminalia Chebula (yellow chebulic) Fruit Powder, Limonene*, Cananga Odorata (Ylang-Ylang) Flower Oil) Cinnamomum Camphora (Camphor) Bark Oil, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (bergamot) Leaf Oil, Pelagonium Graveolens (rose geranium) Flower Oil, Pottassium Iodide, Sodium Chloride, Citrus Limon (Citrus Medica Limonum Lemon) Peel Oil, Benzyl Acetate, Cinamomum Cassia (cinnamon) Leaf Oil, Pogostemon Cabin (patchouli) Oil, Nelumbo Nucifera (lotus blossom) Flower Extract, Potassium Thiocyanate, Lactoperoxidase (milk origin), Jasminum Officinate (jasmine) Flower Extract Oil *Naturally found in Essential Oils cosDNA analysis
Earth Kiss Moroccan Clay Pore Refine Mud Mask I am on my 3rd mud mask from Earth Kiss, this one featuring Rhassoul Clay from the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, which is full of minerals ~ it will help draw out impurities and excess oil from your skin and unclog your pores. It also has crushed apricot seeds and argan shells, which will exfoliate your skin ~ for those with sensitive or dry skin, I would not recommend this mask. Honestly, I am not a fan of crushed apricot seeds in my facial products myself. Like all Earth Kiss products, this contains Shilajit, which is compressed vegetable matter oozing out of the Himalayas and it has over 86 plant micro nutrients ~ antioxidants, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and will help balance your skin. This mask is a brownish-tan in color and has a slightly gritty feel due to the crushed powders. It also is lovely smelling ~ it does smell like apricots to me! It dries quickly on my skin and does not have any pulling or tightening that is uncomfortable. Earth Kiss mud masks have a lot of hydrating and moisturizing ingredients, so that the clay doesn’t dry out your skin, but it does remove a lot of dirt and oil. I rinsed off with warm water, and I could feel the exfoliating bits in this mask ~ when I dried my face, I noticed that my pores looks very clean, very small and my face felt smooth and hydrated. I do love my Earth Kiss Mud Masks! I have mixed feelings about this one due to the crushed apricot seeds ~ but it is a lot finer than most facial scrubs that use that ingredient.
Ingredients: aqua (purified water), kaolin (natural clay), bentonite (natural clay), Moroccan lava clay (Rhassoul clay), pumice, glycerin (plant origin), glucose, glyceryl caprylate (plant origin), maris sal (dead sea salt), xanthan gum (natural thickener), prunus armenlaca (apricot) seed powder, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice, sodium anisate (plant origin), sodium levulinate (plant origin), citric acid (plant origin), cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon) leaf oil, eugenol*, asphaltum punjabianum (shilajit) powder, sclerocarya birrea (marula) seed oil, argania spinosa (argan) shell powder, emblica officinalis fruit powder, terminalia bellerica fruit powder, terminalia chebula fruit powder, gamma-decalactone, vanillin, isoamyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, potassium iodide, sodium chloride, potassium thiocyanate, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, lactoperoxidase (milk origin), glucose oxidase (sugar origin) *Naturally found in essential oils cosDNA analysis
Earth Kiss Clean Up Mud Exfoliate Mud Mask This exfoliating mask uses finely ground lava pumice as its exfoliator ~ don’t worry! Since the microbead ban will be in effect in 2017 (Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015), many brands are turning to alternatives for exfoliating grains, such as jojoba wax beads and finely ground pumice, which is softest abrasive replacement for plastic microbeads. It is mild and very gentle, must better than ground seeds! It is an eco-friendly, renewable and sustainable source that has been proven for centuries as an effective exfoliator. You can see the pumice powder in the product
This also contains witch hazel, to help sooth and act as an astringent, as well as tea tree oil and rosemary, which will act as antiseptic and antibacterial. This mask has a very medical scent, which I believe is the tea tree and witch hazel. It isn’t unpleasant, just a slight bitter, but clean scent. After it dried on my face which was quick, about 10 minutes, I rinsed off the mask, using the pumice to help exfoliate. I swear, Earth Kiss masks always leave my skin smooth and not dry, hydrated and my pores, well ~ WHAT PORES??? I barely see them ~ they are tight and tiny. Every time with Earth Kiss masks. This brand is going to be a regular
Ingredients: Purified Water, Kaolin (natural clay), Pumice, Glycerin (plant origin), Butyrospermum Parkii (shea) Butter, Bentonite (Natural Clay), Illite (Mediterranean clay), Theobroma Cacao (cocoa) Seed Butter), Moroccan Lava Clay, Maris Sal (Dead sea salt), Glucose, Sodium Anisate (plant origin), Sodium Levulinate (plant origin), Xanthan Gum (natural thickener), Aloe Barbadensis (aloe vera) Leaf Juice, Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary) Leaf Oil, Asphaltum Punjabianum (Shilajit) powder, Citric Acid (plant origin), Glucose Oxidase (sugar origin), Emblica Officinalis (Indian gooseberry) Fruit Powder, Terminalia Bellerica (baheda) Fruit Powder, Terminalia Chebula (yellow chebulic) Fruit Powder, Melaleuca Alternifolia (tea tree) Leaf Oil, Limonene*, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Thiocyanate, Lactoperoxidase (milk origin) *Naturally found in Essential Oils cosDNA analysis
Final Thoughts
I went into using these masks thinking that they would be just okay, but came out with a major two thumbs up for Earth Kiss and Andalou. I tried all of the products from Earth Kiss, many thanks to them for sending me the clay wash off masks ~ and there is not one dud in the bunch. Andalou was also a winner with only one mask that didn’t work for me, but overall, I was very happy with their brand. I would love to see Andalou sheet masks being sold more locally, like their wash off mask pack pods. If you love the idea of facial masks and wash off mask packs that are very popular with Asian Beauty, but are held back because you are looking for eco-friendly, natural, vegan products, I would highly recommend both of these brands.
A lot of these masks you can pick up locally in the USA at Whole Foods. They have a huge ec0-friendly skincare and makeup aisle and I love hanging out there (2nd to their bakery section ~ haha) I have also linked the product name to where you can find it online, in case you do not have a Whole Foods near you or don’t live in the USA. I’ve asked my local Whole Foods to start carrying the Earth Kiss wash off masks and I will see if they can also carry the Andalou sheet masks as well
Have you tried any Earth Kiss or Andalou products? Which ones and how did you like them?
Great, thorough review.
