Memebox Korean Beauty Starter Kit Unboxing!

I was waffling on this box ~ this is the first USA only Memebox and the price tag on this baby was huge ~ $39.00.  It only had 4 items in it and I felt it was overpriced, plus I feel that Memebox should not be making USA only boxes because it causes very hurt feelings among our fellow Global Memebox fans.   However, my curiosity got the better of me, because I really wanted to review this box, not just based on the contents, but shipping time, packaging, presentation.  Will it compare to our Global Memeboxes?   So, here it is ~ My review on the first USA only Memebox ~ Korean Beauty Starter Kit #beginwithskin.

I have a whole section in my blog,  devoted to Memebox, so if you want to know more, check out the Memebox category.

Korean Beauty Starter Kit

Healthy skin is the core to a beautiful face, which is why we #beginwithskin. This carefully curated selection is the perfect introduction to the world of Korean beauty.  To get you started, we’ve boiled down the usual yet daunting 10-step Korean skincare routine to a simple, 4-step process. You will find everything you need in this box to achieve enviable, flawless skin!

My USA only box didn’t come in a pink bubble wrap bag ~ instead it came in a brown cardboard box, with some packing peanuts inside.   Inside the cardboard box, was the familiar pink Memebox.  It was shipped Priority Mail ~ 2 day ~ and it took 8 days, from the time I ordered it to the time I received it, to get to me.

When I opened up my pink box, I saw that my items were encased in hot pink tissue paper with a Memebox sticker.  This is also a change from the Global Memeboxes and I actually like this touch.

Informational Card

Sorry for the crappy pictures of the informational card.  These information on these cards are presented and laid out very nicely and better than the Global informational cards.   I like the font better on the USA informational cards as well.

As these products are unknown to me and perhaps even to my readers, I am posting a description of the product under my thoughts for every product.  Normally, I just do a snippet or if it is a product that doesn’t really need a description, I won’t post it.  But for the purposes of my Memeboxes, I will make sure I find the appropriate description, usage and ingredient list if I can find it.   The descriptions will be from the webpage that is linked to the product name.  Not all of these products are sold in the Memebox Shop, so I had to look for them on various sites.   I really had a hard time finding these products, by the way, so don’t be thrown off by the Korean websites that are linked here!

Step 1. Cleansing Oil

Skinfood Black Sugar Cleansing Oil  I have the Skinfood Black Sugar Wash Off Mask and it is just wonderful.  This is a cleansing oil, of which I normally do not use, but have decided to give a couple of brands a try and see if my skin can benefit from using a cleaning oil.  This is part of the Korean two step cleansing method.   This is a rich oil, which smells like lemons.  I love the pump, as it dispenses the proper amount and it isn’t messy.  I ran this thru cosDNA and there are no major acne triggers 🙂 Full Size 170mL  Value $19.40

Product Description: The first step in Korean skincare is to begin by “double cleansing,” which requires two types of cleansers. First, start with a cleansing oil to gently remove oil-based impurities such as sebum, pollutants, waterproof makeup and sunblock. Follow up with a a foaming cleanser (see Step 2) to achieve a more comprehensive cleanse without stripping your skin of essential oils.  Skin Food’s Black Sugar Cleansing Oil is rich in moisturizing minerals like Brazilian black sugar and various fruit extracts, and effectively removes all traces of makeup and impurities from your skin.

Ingredients: mineral oil, PEG-20 Glyceryl, triisostearate, octyldodecanol, sorbeth-30 tetraolate, cetyl ethylhexanoate, polysorbate 20, triethylhexanoin, water, sorbitan sesquioleate, 1,2-hexanediol, alcohol, hydrogenated lecithin, cholesterol, ceramide 3, dimethicone, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), sodium PCA,  betaine, sorbitol, glycine, alanine, proline, serine, threonine, arginine, lysine, glutamic acid, disodium EDTA, sucrose (17mg), CI 19140, CI 17200,  CI42090, parfum analysis

Step 2. Cleansing Foam

It’s Skin Cleansing Foam Have An Eggshell Cleanser  Randomly selected from Eggshell, Green Grape, Pomegranate.   Out of the 3 cleansers, I was hoping for the Eggshell one, as that is more suited to oily skin than the other 2 choices.  The Eggshell is made with egg yolk extract as well as egg shell, which helps cleanse and tighten pores.   Full Size 150mL Value $5.00

Product Description: Cleansing foam is a water-based cleanser that gently removes water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt. This rejuvenates and purifies the skin while maintaining a healthy moisture level.  Formulated with egg yolk extract 1,500g and egg shell 1,500g, this cleansing foam will cleanse away all impurities and leave skin feeling softer than an egg shell.

Ingredients: water, stearic acid, glycerin, potassium hydroxide, lauric acid, myristic acid, glycol distearate, propylene glycol, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamide DEA, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, beeswax,  butylene glycol, egg yolk extract (1500g), hydrolyzed egg shell membrane (1500g), triclosan, fragrance, xanthan gum, methylparaben, tetrasodium EDTA, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin analysis

Step 3. Serum

Goodal Phytorain Murumuru Seed Hydra Serum  I purchased a Goodal set not too long ago and I really like their products.  My only complaint is that they do make an emulsion for oily skin and I wish Memebox would have let us chose our skin types for this box.   I really like Goodal products and this serum is nice, hydrating and rich ~ I will use it on my neck and décolletage and perhaps on my cheeks, as they aren’t oily or acne prone.  I am not sure why this serum has alcohol so far up on its ingredients list ~ I do not smell any alcohol on in it, and if it is supposed to be for dry skin, why have alcohol in a serum?  hmmmmm…… I also use my richer serums on my hands as well, as your hands will tell your age, even if your face doesn’t!  It has a nice scent to it, not herbal, not floral, but something earthy, which is probably all the seeds and sandalwood in its ingredients.  This does have rose flower in it, but it is far down on the list, and when I did a test patch, nothing horrid happened.   Full Size 45mL Value $34.00

Product Description: Serum is a highly concentrated formula that penetrates deeply into the skin and locks in moisture and nutrients. This silky-soft serum is formulated with Amazonian Murumuru seed that helps calm, brighten, and maintain a balanced level of natural water-oil balance. With its unique blend of Murumuru Seed Butter, Cupuacu Butter, and Brazil Nut Seed Oil, this serum is made to smooth, nourish and build a lasting moisture barrier. Ideal for those with normal to dry skin. This silky-soft serum formulated with Amazonian Murumuru seed helps calm, brighten, and maintain a healthy balanced level  of natural water-oil balance.

Ingredients: water, butylene glycol, glycerin, alcohol, acetyl glucosamine, pentylene glycol, phenyl trimethicone, carbomer, phenoxyethanol, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, PPG-26-buteth-26, potassium hydroxide, bertholletia excelsa seed oil, xanthan gum, phospholipids, sodium polyacrylate, sodium hyaluronate, PVM/MA copolymer, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, whey protein, citrus grandis (grapefruit) peel oil, lavandula hybrida (lavander) oil, lactose, theobroma grandiflorum (cupuaçu) seed butter, sodium citrate, sodium dehydroacetate, sucrose, citrus aurantifolia (lime) oil, robes nigrum (black current) seed oil,  serine, arginine, PCA, citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil, cedrus altantica (Atlas cedar) bark oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) fruit extract, citrus grandis (grapefruit) oil, rosa damascena flower oil, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower/leaf/stem extract, alanine, sodium PCA, illicium verum (anise) fruit/seed oil, portulaca oleracea extract, threonine, astrocaryum murumuru seed butter, coriandrum sativum (coriander) fruit oil, salvia officinalis (sage) oil, mourera fluviatilis extract, artemisia absinthium (absinthe) extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, santalum album (sandalwood) oil analysis

Step 4.  Mask

MemeMask Hydrogel Mask  This is a bonus item and was not part of the kit description when I purchased it.  I think it is good that Memebox put another item in here, as this box was expensive.  I have received this mask before ~ it is a 2 piece hydrogel mask and whereas I don’t care for 2-piece masks and actually prefer my cotton masks, this does the job.  Full Size Value $3.00

Product Description:   More hydrating that a traditional facial sheet mask, the unique hydrogel material delivers mega does of hydrating actives to the skin that glows with each use.  The gel consistency has a pleasing, cooling sensation and adheres closely to the skin.  Propriety PGA penetrates the dermal layer at levels 10 times greater  hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and nutrients into the skin. Hydrates:  natural moisturizing actives replenish and preserve hydration for 24 hours, promotes suppleness and smooth texture for youthful, glowing skin.  Brightens & Corrects:  Niacinamide and other brightening ingredients significantly reduce the appearance of dark spots and even out the complexion.  Anti-Aging:  Hyaluronic acid, adenosine and other wrinkle-fighters target fine lines and wrinkles to restore a youthful, healthy-looking complexion.

Key Ingredients:  Baobab Extract: tightens, tones and moisturizes the skin.  Encourages skin regeneration.   Aloe Vera Leaf Extract: enhances the skin’s  elasticity and delivers cosmic blasts of moisture to the skin. Chamomile Extract: encourages collagen production to maintain the look of  healthy skin

Ingredients: water, butylene glycol, glycerin, niacinamide, caprylic/capric triglyceride, ceratonia silique gum,  chondus crispus (carageenan), polyacrylate-13, polyisobutene, polysorbate 20, phenyl trimethicone, cellulose gum, phenoxyethanol, PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil, ethylhexylglycerin, sodium polyacrylate, adenosine, disodium EDTA, fragrance, polyglutamic acid, 1,2-hexanediol, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower water, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, argania spinosa kernel oil, adandonia digitata seed extract, potassium hydroxide analysis

Step 5. Mist

Tonymoly Pocket Bunny Moist Mist   Tonymoly also makes this item for oily skin, called Sleek.  However, Memebox has decided that everyone has dry skin and therefore, needs dry skin products ~ lol.   As with the serum, I will use this on my neck and décolletage.  This bunny is so cute and I love its expression with the pink bowtie.  The mist has a very light sweet scent to it, but it does disappear quickly and this is very moisturizing (at least to me) Full Size 60mL  Value $15.00

Product Description: Keep your skin hydrated throughout the day with this cute portable bunny! Formulated with peach, raspberry, and apple extracts to enrich, refresh and hydrate the skin anytime, anywhere. Ideal for those with dry skin. Also, #adorable  Refreshes, and hydrates skin in an instant, on the go.

How To Use: Even out your skin tone with a toner as needed. Spray mist liberally 12 inches away from face with eyes closed.  Gently pat for absorption.

Ingredients: Purified water, Glycereth-26, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Adansonia Digitata (baobab) Leaf Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Fruit Extract, Fragaria Chiloensis (Strawberry) Fruit Extract, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract,  Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai palm) Fruit Extract, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, fragrance, Disodium EDTA, 1,2-Hexanediol, phenoxyethanol analysis

I also received a $5.00 coupon code off my next purchase at the USA Memeshop, expires at the end of February 2015.

My thoughts on the USA Memebox Korean Beauty Starter Kit

  • I like that it is mailed in a box instead of a pink bubble wrapper, as that is more secure.
  • I like the pink tissue paper wrapping and the font/layout of the Informational Card
  • Shipping was longer than I expected for priority mail.  I ordered this on a monday and expected it by that friday.  No biggie all things considered, priority mail is expensive.  I would have rather that Memebox shaved off a few dollars from the price tag and sent it standard shipping
  • The cost of this box is too high.  As I am a VIP member ~ I purchase way too much at Memebox ~ I had the 20% off coupon for the USA shop and this box was included in that promo.  However, even with that, it was a tad over $31.00.  I guess I am used to the wonderful deals we have had since Memebox started over a year ago.
  • The coupon for $5.00 off is very nice ~ however, unless these are unique codes, it will be the Golden Ticket crap all over again. People will post this coupon code everywhere and folks who didn’t purchase this box will use it.  Then the promo is “used up” and people who legitimately purchased the box cannot use it as it is no longer valid.  Memebox should have just give customers 5 Memepoints in their account when the box was purchased, like they used to do in the past.  Who cares if they are going to spend it at the USA Memeshop or the Global Shop?  It is all ONE Memebox corporation.
  • The addition of the Mememask is a good thing.  This box is really expensive for 4 items, and the inclusion of the mask, along with the $5.00 coupon does help a bit.
  • Memebox played it safe with their choices in this box ~ popular brands like Skinfood, Tonymoly, It’s Skin and up and coming Goodal serum is really a great item to have.
  • With this box, it isn’t a starter kit for all ~ the box is geared more for normal to dry skin and for the price tag, Memebox should have allowed people to choose their skin type:  oily, combo, dry, normal.    Goodal makes products for oily skin, the Tonymoly Bunny comes in “sleek”, which is for oily skin.  I was lucky and got the eggshell foaming cleanser, as that is more suited for oily skin.  The oil cleanser will work on any skin type.   If Memebox could have done that, I would have really loved this box.  As it is, the mist and serum will be used, but not on my face, which is a shame.
  • The box was curated nicely.  Memebox did a nice job with it, although the items were few ~ I think it needed one more item besides the mask ~ such as a facial cream or lotion.

Will I go out of my way to purchase a USA Memebox again?  It would really have to tempt me.  It is funny, I don’t care too much for Naked Boxes, but I love Value Sets.   This box was more of a Value Set to me, just curated very well and packaged beautifully.

I paid $39.00 which included shipping, had a 20% VIP discount, which brought the total to $31.20 and received a  MemeValue ** of $76.40.  ** What is MemeValue?  It is my term to describe the value that Memebox puts on the products, which can be very over inflated.  You can usually find these products at a lesser cost, so I do suggest researching first if you wish to purchase them.

Did you get the Memebox Korean Beauty Starter Kit?  If you do not live in the USA, would you have been interested in purchasing this box?  What did you think of it and what is your favorite product?  Please comment below and let me know!

  1. I bought this and just received it today, but I haven’t tried any of the products, too. My biggest gripe with this was also how dang pricey it is for just four products, and the retail value for the foaming cleanser is shockingly low, and it’s also the one product that I probably won’t use as much, since I don’t have very oily skin and it usually dries it out. I also agree that it would have been super nice to be able to customize it…anyways, I’ll use the products and see what I think about it then!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Can you give the foam cleanser to a friend or relative? I always hate not being able to use something as well – at least with the serum & mist, I can use it on other parts of my body. Memebox should think about customizing their USA boxes 🙂 I think people would really like that.

  2. Glad I didn’t get this one. Memebox is definitely changing things up. I ordered two boxes this year but I’m hesitant, waiting to see what’s up.

    1. Hi Cornelia, they haven’t come out with any links yet for February. As soon as I get one, I will create a February ~ I’ve asked Memebox about the Feb codes, so I will try and get them out there as quick as I can!
