I love Innisfree products ~ some of my favorite items are made by them.  They came out with a Super Food from Jeju line ~Beet (brightening), Blueberry (rebalance), Broccoli (clearing), Kale (antioxidant) and Oat  (mild moisture) ~ everything you need to make a smoothie! 😀  I have tried their Blueberry Rebalancing 5.5 Cleanser (review here) and am currently using their Red Beet Bright Toning Toner.  I was really interested in trying the Red Beet cleanser as I enjoyed using the Blueberry cleanser ~ I was also curious to find out if it had a low pH level like the Blueberry version.  Jolse, a premium online Korean Cosmetic store,  kindly send me this cleanser for review purposes and I thank them for their generosity. 

Benefits of Beets

Beets are a rich source of anthocyanins, which are the flavonoid pigments that protect vegetation from sun damage.  They act as antioxidants and will help protect your skin from free radical damage as well as helping reverse some of that damage.  They can help repair cells damaged from free radicals and stimulate the production of new, healthy skin cells.    This also has anti-inflammatory benefits, so it can help soothe and reduce swelling and redness on your skin. 

Beets can help prevent wrinkles, fine lines and helps heals blemishes.  They can also help with dry skin and improve your skin tone, by overall brightening ~ Beets contain vitamin C, so that helps with reduce the appearance of skin hyper-pigmentation and also refines your skin’s texture, leaving it smooth and soft.

Innisfree only uses super food greens that are graded 0 to 2 per EWG, which means they are selecting high quality fruits, vegetables and grains to make their skincare products.  Their extraction method for the raw super foods materials is by using low temperatures, so it is a slow extraction, but will retain the nutrition and benefits of the raw materials.  

Performance

The first thing I notice about this cleanser is how thick and creamy it is.  It is very dense and its foam is thick and creamy ~ no light bubbles here ~ this cleanser is serious with its foam ~ like whipped cream!  This cleanser certainly has an unusual scent to it ~ the Bright Beet Toner is has a tangerine citrus scent to it and so did the Blueberry Rebalancing 5.5 cleanser.   The Bright Beet cleanser is very earthy ~ it smells like fresh damp dirt with a hint of oranges.  I know that sounds bizarre and disgusting, but it actually is pleasant to me ~ I love earthy scents like this.  Maybe this is what beets smell like once they are used in a cleanser!  haha

As you can see above, I had put some heavy duty makeup products ~ the Balm Meet the Matt(e) Hughes, one of my gold standards for stubborn, long wearing makeup ~ some Korean eyeliners, mascara and other stubborn lip products.   After using my brush to create foam on my hand ~ you can see how dense it is ~ I was able to remove all traces of the makeup.  Nothing left at all!  I didn’t have to apply pressure and was less than 2 minutes from start to finish.   My skin does not feel dry or tight after I used this on my hand.  

The bad news ~ I did a pH test and wow.  This is coming in at over 10 on my test strips.  I tested this a couple of times to be sure, but yep ~ unlike the wonderful Innisfree Blueberry cleanser, which came out to 5.5 to 6 when I tested that.   I did try using this on my face, as sometimes I can use a higher pH cleanser.  My face did not feel dry or stripped afterwards, nor did it have a “squeaky” clean feeling (which is not that good, as that means all of your oils have been stripped away), but while I was using the cleanser, my face itched.  I didn’t have any redness or irritation once I rinsed it off, but that itching feeling is worrisome to me.

Final Thoughts

I love the cleansing ability of the Innisfree Red Beet Bright Toning Cleanser, the foam is amazing and the scent is unusual, but I did enjoy the fresh damp earthy smell.    However, I cannot recommend this cleanser as the pH level is really off the charts. I have used levels as high of 10 before with no issues, but with this cleanser, the itchiness that I experienced was not pleasant.  I don’t know if my skin had an allergic reaction to the ingredients or if the pH level was too high or a combination of the two.   It is a shame, because this cleanser has a lot of positive attributes going for it, but it just didn’t work out for me.   I do highly recommend the Innisfree Blueberry Rebalancing 5.5 Cleanser ~ it is similar in foaming action and cleansing, has a low pH and caused no issues for my skin.
